Hunting with a silencer in Tx

Post by sig.45 »

Im going to Texas to hunt hogs with family in about to weeks. I will be driving from Utah to Texas and I will pass through Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico before i hit Texas. From what i can tell silencers are legal to posses in all of these states. Is there anything i should know or that i am missing. I want to be sure that i am on the up and up while i travel.

Thanks

As I understand the law; there is no season on hogs, it is not considered a "game" animal but you do still need a valid hunting permit. At least that's what I read in the TX hunting manual a few years back. You may want to confirm this with a phone call to the Parks and Wildlife department.

That is affirmative, feral hogs are a nuisance animal no season, no limit, license and permission are required. The TPWD site has all the details.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wi ... uote]Feral hogs are unprotected, exotic, non-game animals. Therefore, they may be taken by any means or methods at any time of year. There are no seasons or bag limits, however a hunting license and landowner permission are required to hunt them.
The only things to keep in mind is suppressors are still listed as a "prohibited weapon" in Texas so just be sure to have a copy of your stamped forms handy. Texas game wardens have a great sense of humor about anything except the violations of the law. If you happen to come in contact with a warden smile, be polite and cooperative and everyone will part with their respect intact. :D

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/newsmedia/r ...
The Commission also adopted rules permitting the use of firearm silencers for the take of alligators, game animals or game birds.

“These devices are already legal for hunting exotic animals, including feral hogs, and there is no resource- or enforcement-related reason to prohibit these devices for hunting alligators, game animals or game birds,” said Scott Vaca, TPWD Assistant Chief of Wildlife Enforcement.
While traveling with your suppressor, keep your tax stamp handy. If the suppressor was registered in the name of a trust, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have your trust document handy just in case you needed to prove you were, indeed, a trustee and thus in lawful possession of the suppressor.

I hunted whitetail in TX last year, with a suppressor, and was told just to have your stamp with you. Have fun!
