ATF bounced forms.

Post by silencertalk »

I was meticulous with the ATF and copied my previous forms exactly for moving my items into a trust.

So for example, if the previous form said barrel length 10.2," I put 10.2"

If the model name said "MP5N (converted HK-94)" I put that in exactly the same way on the new form.

They kicked back 1/2 of my forms asking for changes because barrel lengths and model named did not match the registry.

So that can only mean one thing - the previous forms also did not match the registry but they were approved.

Has this happened to others?

The "registry" is not known for being the most, eh hem. . . "accurate" documentation. I suspect that your forms are correct. Of course you cannot tell them that.

I'm 2 weeks in on a correction myself. Dealer caught the error after I sent the form 4 in. It don't make the wait any better, it just makes you know your close!
Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Send in copy's of your previous forms. I had to do this about3 months ago showing everything matches.

I didn't have any error. I copied the previous forms exactly.

The previous approved forms must have had errors.

They gave me two options:

1. Change the forms to match the registry (they told me what the registry lists).

2. Prove that the registry is incorrect by sending photos of the measurements.

I will go with option 1.

There your firearms so, ultimately, it's your choice.
But, I'd rather have the correct information on my side, than their's.
If that means unerring the registry so be it.

It is not a question of right or wrong.

If they have a sear pack listed as 9mm and my previous form says 223, I don't see a reason to claim to them that it is really 223. It is just a sear and not even in a rifle.

If the registry lists a model name as "HK-94" and my previous form said "HK-94 (marked MP5-N)," they want the new form to say "HK-94" and not "HK-94 (marked MP-5N)". Sending them the previous form showing I copied it exactly won't seem to help.

If the registry has a meaningful error, then sure, I will correct it. But so far it is inconsequential things.

I understand this.
I guess things like

and: caliber, mfr, serial #, etc, is what I would want 100% correct

My surprise is not in the ATF rejecting these so much as I am surprised that someone before me filled out a form and didn't exactly copy the previous one, leading to this problem.

Recently, I asked my State Police for a list of all firearms they had on file, for me.
Believe me when I say there was more than a fair share of mistakes.
I would expect nothing more from anywhere else.

I hope it turns out to be less of a hassle than expected.

Dept of Justice called me and reminded me to get the bounced forms back as there is a deadline and said I could email him scans of my previous forms. Seems like good customer service.
