Ryan Zinke is the first Montanan and first former Navy Seal to serve as a Cabinet member. Wednesday, the Senate voted 68-31 to confirm him as Secretary of the Interior, and he was sworn in Wednesday.

On Thursday, his first day on the job, he signed two Secretarial Orders (like an Executive Order) that are superb:
Secretarial Order No. 3346 overturns the recent ban of lead ammunition and fish tackle used on Fish and Wildlife Service lands, waters, and facilities. The order highlights the need for additional review and consultation with local stakeholders.

Secretarial Order No. 3347 advances conservation stewardship, improves game and habitat management, and increases outdoor recreation opportunities by directing bureaus and agencies to immediately identify areas where recreation and fishing can be expanded. The order also requests input from the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council and Sport Fishing and Boating Partnership Council to provide recommendations on enhancing and expanding access on public lands and improving habitat for fish and wildlife.
Great start!

The Sec of the Interior seems to understand a deep problem that festered at Interior under Obama--people not living in the Western States may not understand the problem.

Since the Feds own much of the land in the Western States, they deliberately (with Obama's blessing) eliminated existing forest and BLM primitive roads by bringing in a bulldozer and making a big pile of dirt at the access to the primitive roads. This cut off people and shooters from areas they previously used for shooting for free on government land, or camped, or hiked, etc. It was a deliberate snub towards the people who own the land (the people of the USA) and for whom the Interior Department is supposed to work. BLM and National Forest lands are by law, multi-access lands for the people.

Sec. Zinke's second Secretarial Order above changes the focus of Interior to expand access and not reduce access as was done in the Obama years.
