Back in 1940's Superman comics ( had first copy but lovely
grandmother tossed out all my comics in 1950s ...gasp )
a crowd said: "Look up the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane?
No, it's Superman."

In 1950s Mad Comics:

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

SPLAT!!

Its a BIRD!"

When I was away at college, my mother went through this stage where everything had to be identified if it was stolen. My mom, bless her heart, bought one of those vibrating engravers and engraved he SSN into all my guns.
