Suppressed PTR91?
Suppressed PTR91?
I have an earlier version of the PTR91 w/18" unthreaded barrel.
I have an AAC 7.62SD.
I'm a right handed shooter.
I had Bill Springfield ([email protected]) do a trigger job on it & now I REALLY enjoy shooting it.
If I get the barrel threaded & put the 7.62Sd on it do you think it would be hearing safe w/full power loads?
Thanks

Somebody please venture a guess.
I checked HK Files forum & didn't see anything there & looked here in search but didn't see an answer.
Maybe someone can speak up or give me a link to a previous topic.
I hate to spend the money to thread the barrel & buy another FH if it's not going to be ear safe.
Thanks

Not hearing safe with full power ammo. I was told you need to change out the bolt locking piece for a # 18 I think it was to hold the bolt closed longer on G3K's - but I haven't spent the time or money on it.

David Whitson, JDW MFG runs one on his clone (could be a real one) PSG-1.
IIRC outside a G3 that's the closest thing to a PTR91. Unfortunately I heard it at a busy public range, so I cannot attest to suppression levels.
I've had quite a bit of time behind a PTR91, I would not want to shoot it while standing for very long. Prone with bi-pod, thanks.
Pic at the top is his PSG-1 (could be a clone, not 100% sure)

cdmillig,
I got mine while Monica's boyfriend was steering the ship & therefore no threaded barrel on my PTR.
I also have an AAC 7.62SD & I think the Phantom FH will look good on the smooth 18" barrel. (If Renegade can ever get it from AAC.)
I see now where I think Thompson is making PTR's barrels!
I wonder if they are still polygonal or regular land & groove?
Bill Springfield did my trigger & if I do what I should I can get around 1" groups.
I've had a few groups w/1/2 & 3/4" 3 shot groups when working up loads but I normally shoot 4 shots & I seem to always pull/drift 1 of the shots & end up around 1 1/2" which I'm still very happy with.
My gun seems to like slower loads rather than faster.

Last I knew a #18 locking piece, you can usually get them from Gordon Miller ( [email protected] ) for about $100.00 + or - a few dollars. They should be able to be had by anyone that builds G3K / 51 copies such as he does on http://www.hkspecialist.net/carrier.htmPitt2500 wrote:Do you think you are better off w/the reduced muzzle blast/noise w/can on or is the ejection noise now worse?
It sounds like either way its not ear safe just wonder which is worse.
Who would have locking piece #18 & any idea of cost?
Thanks
maybe some of the HK parts suppliers such as
http://www.hkparts.net or
http://www.rdts.com might have one for cheaper...?
for more info on locking pieces...
http://www.hkpro.com/lockingpc.htm
and did a search and found this gem
The MSG90 actually uses 2, one marked 23T and another marked 30T. They are both titanium coated and use titanium coated rollers, but one is for use with a supressor (I forget which one). I think the PSG1 and 21E use the same locking peice, but neither is compatable table with a regluar HK91. MSG90 locking peices will not fit in an HK91 carrier either. The G3K (12.4" barrel) uses a marking peice marked "18". All of these locking peices seem to be tailered to the particular .308 variant mentioned and not really for use in "tuning" the gun AFAIK.

Let me know if it's worth it as I just spent the money on a thread adaptor to put the can on the FAL so I can change the gas setting or turn off the gas for single shots.ArevaloSOCOM wrote:I just got a email back from Gordon Miller regarding the #18 piece, he says it's true.
105 shipped.
Needless to say I'll be ordering one.

Re: Suppressed PTR91?
Ok.
Fired my set up this weekend.
Suppressed with a AAC SCAR-H..............Sounded GREAT.
Recoil increased! I have mine set up with a A3 stock and it atucally hurt to fire it, I need to change over to a fixed stock.......I'm thinking that Magpul one.
This is all with the #18 locking piece installed.
It was NOT loud in any way shape or form. IMHO.

Re: Suppressed PTR91?
Yes. Well aware of that thread.
I set mine up the way i did after talking to Gordon Miller..........at tht time, he suggested the 18 locking piece for use with suppressor. Since he knows more about HKs than I do...........I took his advice................there is of course the chance he just wanted to sell me a 18 lokcin piece, I'd hope that's not the case.
I see you think differently.
I will swap to a 17 locking piece if I have any troubles, seems to be the gist of that thread. I have no troubles at the moment, if I do I'll post them.
Very pleased with my set up.

Re: Suppressed PTR91?
Allied Armament makes the drum. It's a US clone/copy of the HK version......very hard to find.......and when u do find one, bend over with the vasaline.....cause Mandingo going all up in ya.
This version is much cheaper now.....I bought one when it first came out and paid 600 for it, a "deal" when compared to the HK version. Now they are sold by Gordon Miller and Adam Webber for about 230.........a absolute no brainer now in terms of "deal".
I will say this, my first drum broke.....the internals were plastic and I sent it back for repair, they were upgrade to SS parts, loads and unloads with no issues now. Incredibaly I have not had a chnace to dump it yet! I was hosting a shoot for my wifey's co workers and was busy being teacher more than shooter. I brought it with every intent to dump it. Factor #2 in not dumping it, after firing a 20 round mag through my set up, my shoulder was beat the F--k up.......I'm a bitch, I'm a pussy, I'm a woman.........the increased recoil + those little ass trinagles rubber piece on the A3 retractable stock + me always wear a cut off = pain......IMHO.

Re: Suppressed PTR91?
My recoil with the can and a Choate folding stock is very pleasant.
More like a .243
Mine has the old style metal pistol grip and I see yours has the polymer (Navy?).
Any advantage to one over the other?

OK, Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to not have you ruin you weapon because you "read it on the internet"
You should be able to test my info pretty easy, shoot with #18 - 50' - locking piece, with and without can. Then change to the factory piece - 45' - shoot it again with and without the can and see which one recoils harder? IF the factory locking piece recoils LESS you went the wrong way and Gordon got 2 sales.
Also, the only advantage the Magpul stock has is a thicker rubber butt plate, you can't even put in a heaver buffer because of the design.
You can get any HK to run SMOOTH with a specific ammo if you have the correct locking piece, if it hurts to shoot something is seriously WRONG!!!!!!!
I have a 7.62SD for my real 91 and I use the #17 when I shoot it suppressed, it is a pussycat.
Here is the AA drum out of my 51K
Good Luck,
