My $.02 (not that I give a flying F--k what any of you think) is that if I built my detachable own airgun silencer designed solely for an airgun and some gun-grabber neighbor saw me popping a trespassing squirrel with it, the ATF would probably be on my ass within the day. They'd have no legal right to do so, but they'd sure as hell be hauling my ass to jail in an SUV payed for by me. They'd then be spending my tax dollars in an attempt to prosecute me.

The likelihood of this happening is extremely low. But the impact is massive. They would be breaking the law, but that's what the BATFE does (or haven't you heard?)

Feel free to speculate on the likelihood and legal grounds. I'm sure that we can all agree that the impact would be a 5 of 5. For my decision making, that's going to put my risk assessment in the red every time.

And doubloon, wow, this is why you don't post to a thread that far past it's due date. I did a website for a guy who makes airgun moderators and he sent me that link to reference on the site, and I thought I'd post that out here. I guess in all the back and forth we had I forgot you had originally linked it. Props to you on the link, although it reinforced my original argument on the usage of "For" in the ATF's definition of a silencer.
...
No worries, I see it as both a for and an against for the reasons LG states. Getting tangled up over an air rifle moderator might be a low probability depending on your locale but the price of entanglement is high even if you're right. I'm far more likely to get stopped for speeding but I do it all the time because the State provides so many convenient ways to mitigate the impact of a single ticket.

Don't get me wrong, I own moderated air guns but I prefer the path of the kind that are manufactured that way instead of a aftermarket device.

The NFA can't be repealed soon enough for me.

Wow. I thought air rifle suppression was more settled than this. I know I'm resurecting an old thread, but I want to buy a .25 Marauder & was looking at ways to make as quiet as possible & this popped up in Google. It looks like it's a form 1 if I want to mess with it from where I stand, at least to protect myself regardless of the actual law.

Sucks. :( I thought I could at least have a super quiet airgun with no stamps attached.
Now I'm even a little nervous about a stock Marauder because the shroud is removeable.

It's depressing. I have to do the same crap I did for my SDN6 for a damn pellet gunto make sure I don't get in trouble. That is messed up by any standard.

There is no Form 4 [currently] required to purchase a Marauder so I don't see why a Form 1 would be required to "mess with it" but I don't claim to know everything that's out there wrt legislation and litigation.

On the other hand the suppressed Marauder works flawlessly so I don't know why you'd want to "mess with it" in the first place.

There are other air guns out there with "permanently" attached moderators/suppressors/silencers.

I'll second that. The Marauder is silly quiet right out of the box. You hear the boing of the striker spring because it's right next to your ear and you hear the whap of the pellet hitting down range. It's incredible. No gain to be had from messing with it. Buy a Marauder and strike fear into the hearts of rodents and marsupials.

You guys are right, it is pretty quiet. I got three of them in .25.
Also installed Marmot Militia shroud & tank extensions. The reason I wanted to "mess with it" is I've also ordered A2As valve & hammer springs for them. I want to tune them up for max power with 43 grain pellets but keep them backyard quiet.

So far, they are really freaking quiet lasers. (I did do the "depinger" mod to the airtanks) Very happy with them.

Three and mods !?!

That's some serious cash, you want to adopt a housebroken gun enthusiast?

Thanks for the tip on the Marmot site, I bought my Marauder a while back and there weren't many OTC mod's available when it first came out.

Ugh. No.
I have twin boys, so I buy in pairs or threes if I want one too & don't already have one. Stuff isn't getting cheaper, so I just buy it & put it away when I can. I'm already broke. They are still young, so until they're ready, my father & brother in law will be shooting the other two with me on Sundays.

So far, just for them:
Two 3/4 scale airsoft ARs to teach them the safety rules and fundamentals with little to no risk.
2 Crosman M4 177 pellet guns once they have demonstrated they are safe with the airsoft & not prone to retardation
2 TI Quest suppressors so the boys don't go half deaf like dad.
2 10/22 tacticals for them (cause they're threaded)
2 Noveske based franken ARs I built for them to shoot when they are big enough. (I was shooting my dad's CAR when I was 6-7, so hopefully they'll be ready around the same age.)
And lastly the Marauders, I have a feeling they'll be shooting those last because of their size & LOP.

And everything else gun related Title 2 & 1 I own is in trust for them because I'm in my 40s and likely to be close to dead when they turn 21.
