Moles

Post by T-Rex »

April, 13th and these little bastards are already tunneling through my yard like a Mexican drug cartel trying to reach San Diego.

I've read plenty of "home remedies", most of which will be difficult, because I work so much.
My best bet would be the mouse trap under a bucket, but I can't seem to find any of their exit holes.

I have carpeted my lawn, in several paces, and find no grub activity. I presume they are stealing my earthworms. They need to die.

Here's another video of an easy carbon monoxide poising system using a garden hose and your car.

Kinda makes me wish I had a mole problem. :D
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

A good mole dog.... Sure the lawn will look like the moon - but the moles will be gone...

I prefer the old fashioned way of father and son armed with their rimfires or air rifles and taking gophers/moles out the proper and fun way.

Here's the little guy my oldest boy and I popped in our backyard and left him on our front porch steps for my wife to see when she got home.

She wasn't too happy with us because she not only brought over friends, but also the pizza guy showed up right before her that she ordered for us all.
My intelligence is like a suppressed rimfire pistol. You may not be able to hear it, but it certainly always hits its mark.

How often do moles emerge?
What times of the day?
Any ways to get them to come up, at will?

I just got one in a scissor style mole trap. Old fashioned approach is still solid. Find his burrow, set a trap and snap his little neck.

If I made a map of his network, it would look like the veins in an old woman's legs.
I put out one of the vertical spike traps and tried the "overturned bucket by the hole with a mousetrap" method. Nothing

I also use the spike traps and am pretty successful with them. But, I saturate an area with 8-10 traps in about a 10' x 10' area. Most mole areas actually have a main "travel" burrow and several feeding burrows. Feeding burrows are only used once, travel burrows are repeatedly used. By using many traps in a relatively small area, I usually end up with at least 1-2 traps in a travel burrow and catch the little guys. Works for me.

Are you folks with mole issues in more suburban areas, or out in "BFE"? Are some regions of a state worse off for moles than others?

I spent quite a lot of time living in the country (BFE) around the eastern seaboard and I've never had a mole/gopher/groundhog issue that I can recall save for maybe once on a farm in NY. That said, I realize things change over time, and as my wife and I are looking to move back up "north" to the south (NC/VA/TN sort of area) and would have horses and such on the property, I'd rather avoid particularly bad areas for mole problems if at all possible...

I wouldn't consider my, immediate, area as "populated". Most of the lots around me are about 5 acres and we are 3 miles from a stop light. I never saw the moles until late last summer. Now, they are the bane of my landscaping.

best way to find an active tunnel..
is to step on a few push-up mounds, and then set your trap on ones that get repaired.

most times I checked traps evening and morning--- caught (found) almost all on the morning check.

used 8 prong traps that my Grandpa used when he trapped them for the fur.

he got a nickel a piece-- skinned, scrapped, and stretched...

that was mighty big money back in the teens' I'm told

I just throw the critter to the closest farmdog :)
