M4-2000 6.8 screw up

Post by samttu » Tue Feb 05, 2019 4:43 pm

I now know the M4-2000 is not a multi caliber can after reading a few posts here. But long story short...I bought the m4-2000 in may 2017 thinking it was a 6.8/556 can. Got approved mid 2018. spent most of 2018 shooting 556 with it without issue. Then I finally decide to try it on the 6.8. :( Nothing too bad...bullet exited without an endcap strike but was tumbling and was 10in high and 4in left at 10yds :) You can see some baffle damage but nothing else. I contact AAC and sent it in. They sent it back saying all they found was an issue with the latch. No one from AAC has told me I screwed up and not to shoot 6.8 thru it again, nor did they address the baffle damage.

I guess my 2 questions are...
1) my can is marked 556. I should not shoot 6.8 correct? :D
2) should I be concerned with the baffle damage?

Allow me to be the first.

This is the most retarded decision. You screwed up.

I see on the left side where you added something, supposedly from AAC, in which it does say you can shoot 6.8 through it.

However, with a search on AAC's website on the product page, I see nothing indicating that you can use it on anything besides 556.

With a POI shift of 10 inches, the baffles are disrupting the bullet---badly. I also note some keyholing in the top of your target. My assessment, You're going to blow it up if you continue doing it.

Oh I know now! lol That's AAC literature...its a bit confusing...but they offer cans in both. If its marked 556, like mine, its 556 only. If your can is marked 6.8 you can shoot either.

And yeah, bullet rubbed the baffles, and came out tumbling. No end cap strike luckily. I put 3- 6.8 rounds though it before realizing something bad was happening... one at 25yds which was off paper...next 2 at 10yrs...which you see keyholed.

Can has been sent in to ACC and sent back...they recoated the exterior and said my baffles were within spec. Stated that if the baffles were out of spec they would have replaced the core.

Should I be concerned with that damage to the baffles or take aac at their word that they are within spec?

Here is the link to the manual on AAC's website. They offer the m4-2000 in both.

I now realize mine is the 556...now i have shitty memory, but I pretty sure silencershop had it listed as multical when i purchased. That was one of my main draws to it was the the fact it was 6.8/556...As I have both.

If they said they checked it and it was OK, then I suspect they checked it and it's ok... for 5.56x45.

As for silencershop, I'm not a fan of theirs, so this is one of those times where I probably just shouldn't say anything.

I'm not looking to make a big deal out of it with either AAC or Silencershop. Just want to be sure I didn't eff it up in terms of accuracy and suppression. You can see the damage if you click on the pics and then zoom in. That was my biggest concern... that the baffles were ok.

True that you didn't do the baffles any favors, but try it and see how it shoots then go from there.

Or how you read "&" is key?? They are both in there... :?

Actually, it's the very first sentence on their m4-2000 product sheet.

It misleading, but thats not the point of this post...

That manual is misleading. I retract what I said. Your decision wasnt retarded. It was still a bad decision.

Trust me...I felt like a dumbass once I realized what the issue was. I am not sure if me wanting a multical 556/6.8 caused me to overlook that detail, or if AAC and silencershops marketing was misleading. I am not trying to point fingers or place blame.

I just want to be sure I didn't affect the functionality/integrity of the suppressor. AAC did say they would have replaced the core if they saw anything out of spec. Like John says above, won't know until you shoot it.

That said...I still feel like a dumbass

Don't feel bad.. I can see how you read it as both.

Usually I make it a practice to check diameter of opening and if it is aligned properly (bad threads can give baffle strikes)

Fortunately for you it could have been a more expensive learning experience.
