SDN-6 work for .30-06?

Post by Wakko » Wed May 08, 2013 10:35 am

I've got tons of Greek surplus .30-06 and a Rem 700 to shoot it with...will the SDN-6 handle the pressures?

Call them they don't respond here that often.

150 grain .308 gives 2,648 ft·lb while 150 grain .30-06 gives 2,820 ft·lb. It's close but I'm pretty sure that AAC would say no...and personally I would be a little spooked with an expensive can and rifle.

The energy the round puts out does not correlate into what a can can withstand. Its the pressure. .308 is actually a slightly HIGHER pressure round than 30-06.

In another thread(viewtopic.php?f=86&t=66021) Mike Mers that said you could shoot 300 win mag through the SDN-6 through a 24" barrel. That was 2+ years ago though. I know I read a much more current thread(might have been over on the hide) on it too that said 24" for a 300win mag, which is higher pressure still than 30-06 and .308.

Ok, I'll reach out to them. I want to run .30-06 through a 16-18" barrel, so that could make a big difference.

I sent an email and haven't heard back, and I've asked a couple of suppliers. So far, no answer.

As a general rule of thumb, you can use a larger caliber silencer on a smaller caliber firearm, provided you follow some simple guidelines. There are three categories of silencers: rimfire, centerfire handgun, and centerfire rifle. As a general rule, stay within the same category when using your silencer on an alternative caliber. You can use a silencer on an alternate caliber as long as the projectile diameter and pressure are equal to or less than the caliber the silencer was designed for. You can use 5.56mm in a silencer designed for 7.62mm, but you should not use a 300 Ultra Mag round in a 7.62mm silencer. Stay with equal or less case capacity then the silencer was designed for. Using a silencer in an alternate caliber can be fun and cost effective, if you use common sense and stay within these guidelines.

The case capacity on a 762NATO is about 54-56 gn

The case capacity on a 30-06 US is around 69 gn

Also, using the SDN-6 on a 30-06 barrel shorter than 24" also exasperates things. This is not an ideal set up for your silencer, and shooting 30-06 through the SDN-6 would be at your own risk. You would be much better off using one of our 300WinMag cans.

Mk-13SD:

300-TM:

Either one of those would be a good choice for you. The 300-TM is a thread mount can, and the MK-13SD is a QD style can that uses a ratchet mount muzzle brake. It really just comes down to personal preference.

I hope this info helps.

Would it be possible to reload/download the .30 -06 to a low (enough) starting load with standard military or 150 grain slugs to reduce its pressures to allow semi fire from an FN 49?

Also, I ONLY use the 51 tooth 2 compartment muzzle brakes anyway - seems that it would impair/deflect the blast somewhat and provide an inherent advantage over the standard flash hider for this application?

If not, is there a permissible list of 30 cal calibers for 16 or maybe 20 inch barrels that the can is good for slow/fast fire besides my AAC 9 inch upper ala M16 and 300 BLK? :?

Ban weapons, not firearms!
It may ONLY be a dollar but its STILL a Sux Tax!
Pssst, so let's change this infringing UNConstitutional Law!

Of course. But, in no way is AAC responsible if you have issues associated with you using hand loads.

It would be nearly impossible to compile a list like this. There are literally 1,000's of combinations you can get with a 16" or 20" barrel with 30 cal ammo. That's why we have a general rule of thumb that I posted above.

Remember that we aren't able to speak in "what ifs" because of liability. And, we have to make sure that we are promoting the safest way to do things.

The type of muzzle device used has no bearing on the amount of pressure introduced inside of the can. The muzzle brake simply redirects gas in a different way. I think you may be thinking of how it could help redirect blast from your blast baffle.
