One powder for 223 and 308

Post by flip »

I am new to loading but have all the stuff I need with the exception of powder and primers. I have reloaded shotgun stuff and a few rifle rounds but nothing to the extent of what I'm getting into. So is there one powder I can use for both of these rounds? Mainly plinking using the basic 55 fmj for the 223 and 150 fmjbt for the 308. I am looking at keeping the amount of "stuff" I have laying around to a minimum this is why the want for one jug on the shelf instead of 2 or three. Primers? What brand do you recommend. Better yet what should I stay away from?

TIA

I'm using ramshot tac for both .223 and .308. Works well and meters well. Primers, whatever you can find.

Varget works well on both. For primers I've used CCI, Federal, and Winchester and they all work equally well.

You can never go wrong with one of the 4895's. Accurate's version is designated 2495. Hodgdon would be my pick since thier 4895 is part of the Extreme line and is not sensitive to temperature changes.

IMR-4895 is good

IMR-3031 gives you performance that is virtually identical with less powder in most bullet weights. Compare load data to see what I'm talking about.

You need to go on and get on a waiting list for primers. I just had 3000 come in for me. Waited months. Call around to your local gun shops. It would be better to get them there. I believe hazmat is around $25.00 plus shipping if you have to order off the internet. Try Grafs.com or call to get on a list. Your going to need small and large rifle primers for those two calibers.

Mild hijack......R632, Have you tried Simmons?...in Bessemer I think. I've been told they have a decent stock of primers.

I use ADI BM2 it sell in the states as benchmark
its perfect for 223 with heavy bullets and works fine in semi auto 308's
I have two hobbies. Shooting and reloading. The more I do of one the more I can do of the other.

I use win 748. It meters extremely well in my dillon 550. 4895 gave me fits!!! I have a jug or two of 4895 and if anyone has any ideas to get better consistency with the throws on a 550 I'm all ears! I love the powder!

with heavier bullets in 223, RL15 is a good powder- not so good with light bullets.

I still have maybe 50 lbs. of WC846 that I use for .223 and .308. I think it's the same as BL(C)-2.
