M4QD/QDSS-NT4 Transitional Can Problems?

Post by Predator »

Fairly recently I picked up a QDSS-NT4 which is actually marked M4QD. I've been told that this is one of the "transional cans" between the older M4QD and the newer QDSS-NT4 type can.

So far I really like the can, but there are a couple issues that I just want to verify if it's normal and to be expected.

First, after firing a couple 30 round magazines through the can, I can no longer get the can off my gun without a flat head screw driver, or something to get under the locking mechanism and "pry it up". Basically it just becomes too tough to unlock the can by hand. Once I do get the can off, I can oil up the locking area and put it on and off without a problem, but again once I run it, I can't get it off again without tools. Also it's not the locking ring that you rotate around, rather it's the clip (not sure the correct term) that you push in and pull out that is stuck.

Second, I have taken the can out on three occasions and each time I put about 250-350 rounds through it, mostly on full auto. The most sustained shooting has been about 3 magazines back to back to back. Well after this last time out, it looks like the finish basically burnt off the can in the middle. I'm not sure if this is normal and I don't care what it looks like, but I am concerned about rust and how well the can is protected without the finish on it anymore. Thoughts?

The finish is normal. You can repaint with a higher temp paint or BBQ grill paint if it bothers you. The latch should not be that hard to operate. See if it breaks in a bit and look for any abnormal wear marks , burs or high spots.

Cool, thanks! I'll keep playing with it then and not worry about the finish.

Dude, Predator, honestly, it looks awesome two tone like that. Enjoy it!

Mine finally got a approved, so I'm hoping to finally get some use out of it shortly.

About time! We need to go out together and shoot em side by side. Also, you need to put some full auto abuse through yours anyway...

Oh and I'm not worried about the look of the can at all. Again I just wanted to make sure it was alright for standing up against the elements, i.e. rain, snow, sittin' in the safe for a longer period of time if need be. Ya know the usual stuff...

Also I updated the pic in the OP with a higher quality one that I took tonight with a real camera.

ETA: I'm sure nohair would let us swing by to have a NT4 off in his back yard!
