223 step cone baffle

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

223 step cone baffle

Post by ranb »

I am making a silencer for a friend. It will be like my 7 inch K baffle can, but with step cones instead. It is all 4130 steel except for the SS muzzle brake it is mounted to.

He wants a short 6 inch can. I aim to please as he is paying for it and I get to experiment with a new design.

do you mean you are making k baffles and the cone part of the k will be stepped?

Ranb, will you be able to meter the final design?

No, these are K baffles and look nothing like the cones I am making this time.

No access to a meter. I just have to decide how I like the sound.

One quick comment on the brake / can adapter.
I noticed you've got a raised flange on the back end of it. That can be eliminated if the can "bottoms out" on the end of the brake at the centralizer baffle. Of course that wouldnt leave you a shoulder should you require a thread protector on the OD when not used with the can.
I know because I drew mine out that way the first time, but didn't like the larger OD on the brake versus the barrel diameter once the part was coming together and I got a look at it.
Food for thought.

Those baffles are pretty close together!

The final product was 7-1/4 inches with 5 baffles, and yes they are close together. Two cones in front, two step cones then a smaller cone next to the end cap. I machined the center adaptor to allow the brake to go completely through instead of bottoming out and kept the raised portion of the brake to index on the rear end cap. The brake is kept on the silencer. The tubing is .035", everything is 4130 except for the stainless brake.

The first suppressed AR in the video is my older K baffle can on a 20" Hbar, the step cone can is on a 16" carbine. The shooters said the step cone can was higher in pitch and a bit louder. The increased noise might be due to the shorter barrel. I might go back to using K baffles except where I need greater strength.

Is it conclusive that the stepped cone design is better than a normal 60 degree cone baffle?

I can not determine which is better for suppression, cone, step cone or K. I only have my ears to go by.

About how thick were the baffles? and .035 seems kinda thin, but seeing as it worked for you, I might go with .049 rather than .065

I think .035" is plenty thick. There is a guy here who made a 50 bmg can from .065" tubing. I made the blast baffle about .070" and the remaining baffles about .040" thick. The spacers are .020".

I used .065" tubing for my first 223 can and think it was way too thick.
