The 10mm

Post by utahpredator_7 »

I am looking at getting one and perhaps two pistols in the somewhat near future, and full size and a compact. For the full size gun, I am looking at a Glock 20. This will be carried around in the hills mostly, so I like the knock down power of the cartridge, but how is the 10mm to suppress? Are threaded barrels available and what suppressor would I run on this gun?
Next, the compact. It will obviously be for concealed carry. Is the 10mm a reasonable cartridge for a compact (for example the g29)? I would consider the 10mm to cut down on the cost of reloading components and so ammo would be interchangeable. Or would I be better off with a 9mm in the compact gun?

Treaded barrels can be bought from lone wolf. I can't imagine is suppresses real well considering what people say about .40

The 10mm is a high pressure round, and can be quite a bit faster than the .40 cal. I have my 10mm loaded at almost 1300 FPS.....but my .40's are only around 900 FPS.
Problem may lie in putting that extra pressure into a can built for .40 cal. and the sonic crack would be nasty. On the other hand, subsonic .40 is very tolerable.

What about running it through a .45 can, say a Ti-Rant? It doesn't have to be super quiet, but I do want a decent sound reduction.

You could get a threaded conversion barrel for it in 40s&w from Barsto. The cost is high though, but it would give you a very versatile hill gun.

I guess you could load 10mm to subsonic, Speer has a couple of 200gr loads listed that clock right around 1000fps. Maybe someone could share a couple of loads with us.

You can shoot FBI Lite ammo in it and it will behave like 40 S&W. My Glock 20 is suppressed. It is ok.

You can push 135s to around 1700 FPS with 800x. Doubletap sells ammo loaded to pre-lawyer data.

The loadbooks are all neutered

So with a bit of work I could get it to run sub-sonic perhaps, thats good. But for carrying around in the hills I want the full power loads; would it be too hard on a 40 can to run hot 10mm loads for it or would it be ok?

I think you would have to ask the manufacturer that question directly. I am sure full power 10mm would add alot of wear and tear on any suppressor, both the baffles and booster. With the cost of a stamp being what it is, and the rules stating that manufacturers just can't replace your tube with a new one without a new stamp, I would look specifically for a 10mm suppressor if it were me, that way at least the warranty is still in effect with your host.

Here is one manufacturer that rates their suppressor for 10mm, not sure about how quiet it is as I have read mixed reviews, but with the ballistic crack your going to have I don't think it's going to much matter.

http://www.awcsystech.com/products/supp ... piter-eye/

I would also contact Dave at Liberty Suppressors, their Mystic is listed as being capable of handling 9mm, 300/221, 300BLK, 338 Spectre and 357 Magnum. Maybe he could do a custom job for a 40/10mm?

http://www.libertycans.net/mystic.html

Maybe some others will post some 10mm rated suppressors. Good luck with your project and let us know when you get it up and running!

I don't have a 10mm, but from what I'm hearing 10mm subsonics about equal 40s&w. Maybe you want a 20 and a 23 (or19). The big 10mm for walking around in bear country and a compact 40 or 9mm with a threaded barrel for general carry and suppressor shooting.

9mm suppresses pretty well (given 147 grain ammo) and the gun is a 'happy medium' size. Small enough to carry and big enough to grip properly.

I am with NCSU90 on this one. If you shoot a 10mm through any factory .40 can I think it is flirting with disaster. Given, most manufacturers try to overbuild stuff to be "idiot proof"(not calling YOU an idiot) but your talking alot higher chamber pressure and at least 400 fps difference. I have a kimber 10mm and wouldn't even dream of trying to supress it at around 1300 fps. On the other hand, my USP in .40 w/ AAC Evo is a dream to shoot, almost feels like shooting a simulator from the lack of noise and ease of use.
You can definately accomplish your goal of quieting it down SOME but will have to find someone who will/ does build a can to put on your 10mm. No mistake though, I love my 10mm!! and Uncle Ted does too..
Good luck on your proeject!!

I have 3 10mm guns (Glock 20/29 and a Kimber 10mm). My favorite load is the Double Tap 135gr Nossler @ 1600 fps. This is not a supressor friendly round.

You can get a 40sw barrel from Lone Wolf and shoot some slower 200gr rounds, and it will do OK. You use the 10mm magazines when you have the 40sw barrel.

If you really want to do this, then concentrate on the heavier (slower) bullets.

Good Luck

Has anyone tried DoubleTap's 230 gr. WFNGC Hardcast http://www.doubletapammo.net/index.php? ... uct_id=158 ? They look to be loaded right at the borderline between subsonic and supersonic. (1075 fps in G29, 1120 fps in G20). I'm going to buy a box and chronograph them. Depending upon the results, I'm really tempted to buy a threaded barrel from Bar-Sto (probably for a G29). Bar-Sto doesn't use polygonal rifling, but then then barrel will be extended, so I would guess that the velocity would be very close to a stock Glock barrel.

As for cans, AWC's Triad is available in ".40 cal / 10mm", so it should work. If I do buy a thread Bar-Sto, I'll be using it on a .45 cal Triad (which seems like it should work since their .40 cal can is rated for 10mm).

Of course the problem with Bar-Sto barrels is that they mean the part about about a 3-4 month wait for custom order barrels. They currently have a threaded 1911 10mm barrel ready to sell, which is tempting me. DoubleTap's equalizer load (135 gr. HP and a 95 gr. ball) is subsonic, but I'd rather let someone else try that out in a can first. :?

OK, I purchased and chronographed DoubleTap's 230 grain WFNGC Hardcast load in a stock Glock 29. I was a rather surprised that it didn't match what DoubleTap advertises. I measured 20 rounds and got an average of 982 fps with a range of 960-1004 fps. (I'm pleased that the load is subsonic, but I am tempted to contact DoubleTap for an explanation.)

For fun, I chronographed DoubleTap's 135 grain Nosler JHP load in a G29. It averaged 1480 fps, which is consistent with their advertising of 1600 fps in a G20. It's been too long since I used my 10mms and Doubletap. I was perhaps 10 feet away from the chronograph. That load was blowing leaves off the table supporting the chronograph. There was an evergreen tree around 15 feet away and off to the left, and it moved like a gust of wind was hitting it when I fired. I've been trying out .357 magnum, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and even 9x25 Dillon, but nothing was quite like DoubleTap's 10mm 135 grain load. If I do put a can on that load, well, I hope that my Triad TI can handle that much gas.

(The temperature was around 55 degrees during my measurements.)

Well, I have a few more interesting test results to share. Today, I chronographed DoubleTap's 230 grain WFNGC Hardcast load on a Glock 20 and a Kimber Eclipse Custom II. With my Glock 20, DoubeTap's 230 grain load ranged from 1010-1051 fps, mean 1030 fps, standard deviation 10. In the 5" barreled stock Kimber, the load ranged from 1047-1087 fps, mean 1062 fps, SD 10. It looks like it is "safe" to purchase a threaded Lone Wolf barrel for my G20. I would much prefer to use a 1911, but another 1/2" of barrel might leave me with a supersonic crack.

But first, I tried out DoubleTap's 135 grain load in my Glock 20. The velocities ranged from 1527-1585 fps, with a average of 1558 fps, SD 24. A neighbor later commented that "the first thing you were shooting was really loud." I don't think that he understood that I am working on that problem.

elevation 250 feet, temperature 55 degrees F

The 135 grain ammo was dated 2007, so YMMV.
