AAC SCAR-HD with holes???
Why in the hell are there holes in the AAC Scar Heavy suppressor???? They are drilled in pairs and there are 4 sets of them. Flames shoot out of the damned things at night. Does anyone know why this is?

My SCAR H doesn't have any holes, is that a new feature?JasonM wrote:To reduce the cyclic rate?lostwasthechild wrote:Why in the hell are there holes in the AAC Scar Heavy suppressor???? To slow down the cyclic rate of the rifle.

I have never seen one like that. I only heard about them. It is a modification the customer did.

Linked pic from an ARF thread (not my pic):
When we tested the SCAR the operators had a lot of dislike for the holes. They made a huge flash at night and kicked up a lot of dust and sand when shot from the prone.

Smcharchan,
Thanks for posting that picture. That's exactly what I'm talking about. All of our Scar Heavy cans have those damned holes in them. It makes the can worthless.
So, "to reduce the rate of fire" is the actual reason, And this was NOT done at AAC. Thanks for the help.

Re: AAC SCAR-HD with holes???
Wow that was genius. We need to reduce the back pressure to slow down the cyclic rate.......what do you think....let's just drill some vent holes in the suppressor.

Re: AAC SCAR-HD with holes???
Im going to assume that the fellas over at Crane put these holes in the supressors, since AAC did not. My guess is as good as yours as to who all got these "modified" versions.
Re: AAC SCAR-HD with holes???
Cool can ruined by holes, but the SCAR-H gun is sweet.

Re: AAC SCAR-HD with holes???
Yea, it just doesn't make sense to me on so many levels. It seems as though it negates some of the major tactical reasons which a suppressor is designed to give the operator, begging the question, aside from noise dampening, what is the point? Seriously, they say it is to slow the rate of fire? Since when are the boys being taught to use automatic fire from a battle rifle anyway? I would imagine that the SCAR H is probably a designated marksman weapon or force multiplier which is maybe 1/fire team or less. I would also imagine (keep in mind, I have been out of the infantry for 5+ years) that the boys are being taught that single well aimed shots are preferable to automatic fire/burst, and that controlled pairs are an appropriate way to lay down suppressive fire. With that being said, the removal of the suppressor's ability to eliminate muzzle flash and signature, some of its suppression capabilities, etc., in order to slow down the rate of fire... Well, to me it seems asinine to say the least. Then again, I don't work at crane with nothing better to do than to try to come up with ways to make it look like I am "improving" something so that I can put it on my fit-rep to try to get promoted or get a NAM or a Navy Com... Maybe they are using it on the 240? If that is the case, then what of the reports that everyone's can in the whole unit was drilled? Furthermore, if the MG operator needs to slow his rate of fire why not just shoot without the can in the first place or use shorter more controlled and targeted bursts?

Re: AAC SCAR-HD with holes???
Cyclic rate applies to semi auto also. It is a factor that effects rifle reliability. If the bolt moves too fast, the magazine spring cannot put a round in place quickly enough.

I don't think this was Crane's idea.
