The wife's two cents.....

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

The wife's two cents.....

Post by OJB4 »

Last night my wife saw me looking at silencers and asked "Why do you need a silencer? Isn't the animal already dead before it hears the shot?".

My response...."You're asking the wrong question. The question should be why WOULDN'T I want SOME silencers!!!!!"

She smiled and said...."OK"

Not like she had much say in the matter anyway!

BINGO!

That's more or less what I tell people. That's what I told the CLEO when I went for my first signature. He told me I was the first person to bring him such a request. Didn't really balk, just asked me to leave the paper work while he made sure it was his baliwick to sign such things. I said that as soon as I learned that there was a legal way for me to own this, I started the process and that I was surprised that everybody in this county doesn't already have them. He had a little chuckle and I suspect that he privately saw it too. If I can have a silencer legally, why wouldn't I want one? I'll bet he got one himself.

I live by this rule.

Sometimes it better to ask forgiveness than to ask for permission. 8)

I told my Sheriff that I shoot allot and I have noticed that my ears are starting to ring even while using earplugs. He just smiled and ran my DL # then signed. I told him that I would see him in another month or so to sign another form. He told me not to forget to go vote next week.

My wife tollerates it because its been a life long obsession.

Never met the Sheriff and he signs.

Everyone should be allowed one a year. Tell her that.

Your vignette reminded my why I am still, after 42 years, nuts about my wife.
Just after we were engaged ( one week after we met ... 'My Momma Didn't Raise
No Fool' - my DI best friend's quotation ) I explained my interest in weapons. She thought it
was excellent and wanted to learn to shoot to appreciate my sport and join me
" ... and also when you are on TDY I can protect
our family and child when we have one."

Picked up a .357 Colt Trooper as a revolver was as simple an effective
piece for a woman. When I took her to the range I went through step by step
the safety rules and had her get familiar with its operations, how to sight
and then dry fire it a while.
To the right were a bunch of crusty
shooters I knew who periodically looked over ... definitely not at me :) !

[ Truth in lending: I have never been able to fire any revolver accurately.
But my NM Gov. .45 and I were practically one from birth. Another story. ]

When it came time to shoot I told her that it did not matter how well
she shot and not to be concerned at hitting the 75' target since home
distances are only ten to twenty four feet ( SS friend told me that this is range
they practiced at ).

I loaded the Mag, handed it to her, put on our ears, and had her two-hand-hold
start shooting. After each round I could not see the target hit but that was not
the point of the exercise. When finished, piece still pointing down range she
opened up the cylinder, ejected the spent cases, and placed the weapon on the bench.

The guys nearby were quietly chortling as they looked at the target
through their scopes, which I found damned rude since this was her first time.

"I am proud of you, it doesn't matter, home defense is not target shooting".

After a few minutes a cease fire/lay down weapons declared. We all walked down
towards the targets. Just as we got near to our target I saw that she had shot them
all in the black. I was so happily surprised that I gave her a hug and expressed how
proud I was of her first time shooting.

She did not say anything for a moment and then, turning to me, said in a concerned whisper:
"Aren't the holes supposed to be touching each other like in the movies?"

The guys near us burst into laughter and said "Miss, we can't fire a .357 that well".

To this day she out shoots me and appreciates my hobby. Love that lady.

Moral: Marry your dream girl.
Thanks Dad for teaching me "I am too poor to buy cheap things. Get
the best up front." :)

My lovely wife doesn't see the need for me to get one, however, she lets me buy what I want when I want even if she doesn't agree. We've always kept our money separate and split the bills down the middle. As long as neither of us get ourselves into debt then neither of us care what the other buys. It's been a great system for the last 11 years for US.....it's great for times like this when she thinks a purchase is stupid.....she can't say anything about it other than OK.....hope you have fun with it.....(little does she know that this ONE isn't actually one, but I plan on starting the paperwork on up to 5) haaahaaahaaa....still can't say anything about it though cause I won't be going into debt to make multiple purchases.....WOOOHOOOO.....

I went to start paperwork on my first silencer this morning.....had to get my address on my drivers license fixed.....already finished with that process. Called the dealer and he said that I'd have to form a trust since the sheriff in my home Parish doesn't sign off on silencers (WHAT an ASS) It's legal to own....why shouldn't they HAVE to sign? They're an elected official. Whatever.......I'll grin and bear it and form a trust.
I've gotta stop this habit.

Since my Parish sheriff won't sign can I get around him signing if the Chief of Police of my town signs? Or MUST it be the head honcho of the parish's signature?

Thanks

Goes to prove my point. FORD [ Glenn ] was not too classy.
He got irritated with her when she said she preferred
a 'Brown Eyed Handsome Man' with good taste who drove an ASTON-MARTIN. :) :)

In 1956 it was a Handsome Man in a 1956 Cadillac Sedan de Ville tearing up Southie with
Chuck Berry blaring out of surround speakers.

Hmm. Could that loud Rock & Roll have killed the high frequencies??

+2 You demonstrate remarkably great taste.

Many thanks. Ours was a similar 2 tone, 4 door 'convertible hard top' in white as
in the picture but with the Caddy sky blue body. To this day I remember the right
front spark plug being the biggest pain in the butt to access as there
was the charger in the way ( no alternators then) ; a clear glass bottle holding windshield washer fluid,
the brocade bench seats that were long enough that I could lie comfortably
on them; the automatic radio changer on the floor; and the over 21' length.

The other two unique features were the elliptical chrome exhausts and
the 'secret', driver's side back red light with the hidden button that
when pressed lifted up and exposed the gas cap.

And polishing it with Blue Coral took hours ... but I enjoyed polishing the two
front parabolas ... a guy thing. :)
[Historical note: Tufts Prof. Kreifeld, Human Factors, once told in a lecture
that the wax company put resistive wax into the mix 'because folks
needed to put heavy effort to be convinced that Blue Coral was superior.
'Hard to put on but last the longest'. In
reality great wax is easy to put on."
The complete Cleaner/Wax/Polish system for say the Aston Martin
is effortless and as easy to apply as [ 1940's Detective Signet Pocket Book Novels] "running
your hand up the nylon covered leg of a sexy dame as she reaches for her
.38". :)

On the highway this 'boat' got 19 mpg. We would drive down to Florida in
2.5 days in it with no problem. Every engineer knew that the Caddy
engine was vastly superior to any Mercedes of the day. Then the bean
counter Smith came in and 'effed' up the car.

I believe I still have the Service Manual in my collection (including 1964 Buick
Wildcat; all the Benz Service/Body/Transmission manuals up to the 420SEL)

Again, I appreciate your reminding me . When my Dad passed away in 1964
I could not keep. To hard.

Best!

Wives evolve over time.

Mine started out as one not having had any association with firearms at all.

Over the years she's been introduced, been given her own guns, has shot IPSC, gotten her carry permit, and is a trustee for our NFA Trust.

Has done very nicely indeed!

We've now been married over 40 years. Be patient and include her in the fun. The reward is worth it.

I hope my girl friend turns out that well. Her dad was an ass and ruined her on shooting at 12 years old. Gave her a snub nosed 357 to shoot with no instruction and no hearing protection, she still has a small scar on her forehead from the front sight. But she told me a few days a go she wants try a suppressed gun, so there maybe hope.
