Best 22 suppressor: YHM Mite, Silencerco Sparrow or....?

Post by dan9591 »

Thanks for your input on my last question! I now have a new one for you...

This will go on a Ruger 10/22 rifle. It may eventually be converted to a bullpup. It will be shared with other 22 rifles, so my original idea of an integrally suppressed rifle or barrel won't really work.

What's the best 22 suppressor out there? I've been checking out the:
YHM Mite: http://yhm.net/index.php?main_page=prod ... cts_id=168
-or-
Silencerco Sparrow: http://www.silencerco.com/?section=Prod ... ge=Sparrow
-or-
Is there something else I could be missing?

Is the YHM Mite REALLY 2.9oz? And it still suppresses so well (at least according to maj. malfunction)? That's crazy light and quiet! Something must be wrong! What am I missing?

Primary requirements are sound suppression and weight. Weight is very important. Pretty mch every 22 can I've checked out is super light, but no more than 7oz, but that should be the max. I don't really care about cost and seeing how pretty much every 22 is user serviceable, maintenance isn't really an issue.

Thanks in advance!

Well, the YHM Mite gets a pretty bad rep on many forums, but in reality its not that bad (I have one).

With that said, you would be foolish to buy one over the Sparrow (I have one).

There is a price difference obviously, but you will get what you pay for. Also, the Suppressor game is not really for the guy that is pinching pennies.

Buy the Sparrow, stop considering the Mite. Way too many issues with it besides the fact that the Sparrow is an awesome can and has some awesome features.

Also look at the Liberty TL and SWR Spectre II.

The TL will foul the mags less and sound great and the Spectre II is Easy to clean and new / hot.

There better cheap cans out there than the Mite but get a good easy clean can with all SS guts.

Good move not spending all on one gun, I be board shiftless.

Forget the Mite, on a rifle it'll perform well, but the design is crappy and servicing it can be a pain.

The Sparrow is excellent, maybe a little heavy for a rifle (compared to others). It is the easiest to clean of all the top cans.

If weight is your primary concern, look at the AAC Prodigy.

Other great all around cans to consider- AAC Element, SWR Spectre 2, Liberty Kodiak, X-Caliber Genesis

Haven't seen one yet, but certainly promising. It looks like a hell of a deal. If you are giving them away, I'll take one. ;)

I have a SS Mite and I'm happy with it especially on a rifle and it's a bang for your buck can. I wanted a Sparrow but at the time they were hard to get....For a reason.

My secret to breaking the Mite down is using anti-seize and also breaking it down as soon as I'm done shooting, While its still warm. Anyways, if you got the money pass on the mite. I bought one because it was all I could afford.

SS Sparrow or Spectre II are your best choices.

I already have an SS Sparrow and at some point I'll be picking up a Spectre II.

Essence, Kodiak/TL, Sparrow, Element, Spectre, Prodigy are consistently listed. After watching videos of cleaning the above cans, I went with the ss Sparrow. There are others not as common that users are happy with.

I'm waiting on my stamp for my Spectre II...it seemed like a good deal for the price. I know everyone seems to love the Sparrow, but I'm excited about the Spectre II.

What everyone above just said, skip Mite, I have one and just had it retrofitted to make it quieter and easier to service and I paid full price because that's how the only dealer I knew of at the time rolled, so my mite has cost me about $800 after taxes. The Spectre II (My Spectre I blows the mite out of the water on pistols, durability and ease of cleaning, basically everything that counts), Element, Sparrow, Kodiak, etc. are all better choices.
Stupid, stupid NFA items.

Many good choices Xcaliber Genesis, Gemtech Outback, AAC Element/Prodigy, SilencerCo Sparrow, SWR Warlock/Spectre, etc. I own all of them.

Mite is not one of them.

An Interesting development has come up since I asked the original question...

Thompson machine is now offering an integrally suppressed takedown ruger 22:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgLm7rSg5JA

It's 1100 retail. My local dealer will sell it for a bit less. I figure the rifle alone is ~330, and a sparrow is ~500, so for a couple hundred more I could have the "complete package". I obviously couldn't use the suppressor on another host, but I think this is a really neat setup...

Thoughts?

For a second can that is a great choice, can number one should be able to be moved around. You'll just end up buying a one for a pistol anyway most likely.

Do you know me? It sounds like you do! 8) Or have you gone through the same motions before? Or is that just what happens to everyone after they buy their first... you just "need" another one! That's probably how it'll end up, so i may just as well give in, buy one and save up for the other. Your advice is sound, but I would really like a rifle first and between buying the rifle, suppressor and threading the barrel/moving back the sight, the price is very close. That being said, I am paying a visit to my dealer tomorrow for the rifle... Woo hoo!

Don't mean to hijack the thread but has anyone used or heard anything about hunter town arms 22 cans ? The guardian seems like a sweet deal.

I'm waiting on the paperwork for a Xcaliber Genesis, shot it many times with my dealer along with several other silencers. I would put it right up there with, if not higher then, the element.
