Do all Titanium rifle cans throw sparks?

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Do all Titanium rifle cans throw sparks?

Do all Titanium rifle cans throw sparks?
Does anyone have personal experience with a titanium silencer on a rifle that doesn't throw sparks when fired?

Not all titanium rifle cans throw sparks outside the can, its all about the design of the baffles that keep the sparks internal.

I've seen some that do and others that don't. I also think it has to do with the caliber and ammo type too.

My SAS Ti Arbiter does not throw sparks with 5.56, 6.8, 300 BLK, or 308 Win.

More of it has to do with design than what caliber or ammo type.

Good to know, I was thinking something like 556 would be worse about throwing sparks than say a 9mm or hotter or dirtier ammo would have an effect as well. I wasn't for sure, I was only guessing since I saw a 556 can threw sparks worse when a different ammo brand was used.

They all do it to some extent- whether it's one shot in 50 or every shot....

(the ones that I've seen at least)

That was one of my concerns with buying a titanium suppressor was seeing how some flew sparks like crazy... It wasn't a concern of the report that it made, it was my fear of having the can turning out to have a shorter life span.. Here's what I know,

When I spoke to liberty about their titanium can, they told me the blast baffle being titanium is where the sparks are generated, so they use a SS blast baffle to prevent sparks.

Sparks are generated throughout the entire can, the blast baffle makes the most though.

There is no lifespan decrease with titanium.

You can afford titanium and you're worried about a few sparks? :D

If your asking the OP the who knows in my case, It's affordable.. I didn't really wanna pay 1k but with the wait times I'll be damned if I'm getting anything that isn't top notch :D

And yes you are correct it does throughout the whole can.. Guess I shouldn't paraphrase. But the point I guess was if the blast baffle isn't titanium it shouldn't spark much or at all.

Even with a SS blast baffle it WILL spark. If the design of the baffles allow the sparks to leave the can is another story.

If it is a titanium can with titanium internals on a centerfire rifle it WILL spark. No if ands or buts about it.

I started a thread in another forum about this subject. Whether in this forum or anywhere, I hope more people chime-in on issues or information. It rarely gets discussed.

I'm curious as to why titanium sparks and steel doesn't.

It sparks because non-oxidized titanium ignites unbelievably easy.

The sparks are chunks of the titanium that has come off the can and has ignited. Albeit they are super small particles.

Titanium forms an oxide layer so incredibly fast the rest of the can doesn't ignite and the spar extinguishes relatively quick.

Younger guys that race and some hotrodders will put titanium barstock on the rear of their cars and drag it on the pavement, creating sparks.

Its the same thing about fireworks, titanium powder ignites so fast that it appears to explode. The bright white flashes in fireworks is usually titanium powder.

You can light titanium on fire, steel you can't.

So if the titanium throughs off super small particles, Does this shorten the life of the baffels.
Do SS baffels have a longer life span than titanium?

No the life of a titanium can is no less than that of a SS.

SS throws off pieces as well just don't ignit so you don't see them.

Throwing off sparks?

In a can that could be used
in close confines with ignitable material (e.g. black
powder at a shoot), warehouses, munitions, gases, etc.?
[ For those who have been there, you understand.]

Being a simple minded Southern boy ( South Boston that is )
I do declare I shall limit any designs to the old and true non-igniteable metals.

How about trying some Magnesium. Now at a SG of ~1700 kg/cu.m
that would make a really light suppressor. Then in the background
there could be playing "You Light Up My Life" [ quite short a that point]

Thermite anybody?

Now I know why longevity runs in my ancestry. :)

Titanium cans are fine in situations like meth labs and are used there as well.

I can't tell if this is a joke or serious. Swat teams use suppressors and they raid meth labs... so maybe you are serious.

I'm curious how big these sparks are. And if they are large enough to give away someone's position at night.

I'm betting snipers don't use Ti cans.

Yes I am being serious.

The sparks are far smaller than muzzle flash. The sparks I have seen were extinguished around 4-5 inches past the muzzle.

Yes, snipers use Ti cans, they in fact prefer them if given the option.
