SRI is Melonite treating Sparrow tubes!

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

SRI is Melonite treating Sparrow tubes!

Post by strobro32 »

EDIT: 10/9/2013

It's happening right now! Get in on this.

If you own a SilencerCo SS Sparrow with the parked steel tube and would be interested in having it treated with Melonite for durability, Matt of SRI (Stalking Rhino Industries) is considering a group buy.

Matt would want about 30 for $30 pricing.

If you have an interest give a shout out here. This is not a group buy yet, just seeing if there is interest.

BTW, Melonite is a hot salt treatment that produces an extremely hard and durable finish that is much better than the parkerizing that is on the tubes now. This treatment is the USA version of Tennifer that is used on Glocks. It would make one of the best cans on the market better. :)

If it doesn't splatter, shatter, burst or explode, it's not worth shooting.

I'm probably in - but pending the answer to the same question as brought up in the other forum - what is Silencerco's stance on warranty if this is done to the tube?

Interesting. Couple of questions, are we talking outer tube only or including end caps, and also what effect would the process have on the engraving, i.e. Logo, serial #, etc.? Maybe possibly a sample with photos be made available? Just a few thoughts I'm throwing out.

I would be interested but pending warranty info.

Is there any risk of warping?

At this point it would just be the tube but we should be able to do the core as well as the caps but I am verifying this as we speak.

The process will not affect the engraving at all, it is a surface treatment not a paint to fill anything in though it will darken it.

Don't have any pictures because we haven't done any of the Sparrow's yet, but we are trying to get one done so everyone can see what it looks like pre and post treatment. Since we don't have one in the shop we are working the logistics of getting one now.

I will try and get in touch with Silencerco and see what is up about the warranty if we do the treatment.

Spoke with Silencerco/SWR today about this, they are looking into the warranty issue and will get back to me ASAP on it.

I will let you all know as soon as I hear back from them.

Doesn't matter, we can do the process while it is in transfer.

I keep hearing this thrown around but never confirmed; are the newer iterations of the Sparrow's outer tube stainless now? Mine was a from a fresh batch in October of last year so definitely a newer one, so assuming the above is true probably with a stainless tube as well. If it's not true and they are still producing with standard carbon steel for the outer tubes you can count me in as well.

This process can be done on SS as well as carbon and with the same benefits.

Based on my discussion with Silencerco/SWR we may be good on the warranty aspect.

Turnaround will hopefully be quick, its all first come first serve so we have to get all the sparrows prepped and in line as fast as possible, it will shorten processing time if we do it smooth enough.

So far between this site and that other site we have 20 cans interested in this process.

We need at least 15 more because in my experience only about 80% of people actually send their parts and we HAVE to have them all in at the same time and done at the same time.

If we have stragglers it WILL increase turnaround depending on how long they take to get them sent.
