Correct H limit for 5/8 by 24 threads???

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Correct H limit for 5/8 by 24 threads???

Post by L1A1Rocker »

Brownell's has a tap that is H3. Is that the correct tap for a muzzle brake? It just seemed a bit big to me. Two more questions. . .

9/16 hole to give 100% thread engagement?
Any special recommendations on dies for 5/8 x 24?

Thank folks!

You don't want a 100% engagement, aim for around 75%.

Think of it like 100% being similar to a press fit for a dowel pin.

That said I don't use taps so I can't comment on the H3 aspect.

Scroll about a quarter of the way down.

If that is correct (or I'm reading it correctly), you want the hole size for 50% engagement for an H3 oversized tap.

I'd test drilling a 37/64 hole. If that works, great, if too tight, go to 19/32

I don't think you'd get a 5/8-24 tap to go in a 9/16 hole. Never tried, but I don't think it would have room to work. I have a 5/8-24 tap you can borrow but no die that size.

100% engagement is still going to be larger, around .571"

75% is .585"

All you need to know about taps.
In the tables below, tap selections are shown for the Class of Thread desired and, under the Class of Thread heading, applicable GH Numbers are listed. "G” designates Ground Thread. “H” means that pitch diameter is on the high side of basic. These two letters are followed by a numeral showing the tolerance of pitch diameter oversize as follows:

H1 = Basic to Plus 0.0005"
H2 = Basic Plus 0.0005" to Plus 0.0010"
H3 = Basic Plus 0.0010" to Plus 0.0015"
H4 = Basic Plus 0.0015" to Plus 0.0020"
H5 = Basic Plus 0.0020" to Plus 0.0025"
H6 = Basic Plus 0.0025" to Plus 0.0030"
H7 = Basic Plus 0.0030" to Plus 0.0035"

I like tight holes myself. :mrgreen:

Forgot to add this chart.
Look at the bottom left corner in the white box.

I would like to know this also. I really like the lathe infeed calc.

I don't remember the software as I've had the chart for many years.
I've given others a copy of it many times, so I'm sure it has made its rounds more than once.
