Holstering with a silencer

Post by whatsit »

Hi everyone. I finally broke down and bought an Osprey 9mm from Silencerco. I don't have it yet (ATF wait), but I've been thinking about how to use it on the range. I realized that the holsters I have for my primary host (Walther PPQ) probably won't accommodate the Osprey very well. The range we usually go to doesn't have much of a shooting table, so all of our pistols are holstered when they're not being shot. Besides, we're usually moving around and having fun so it would be nice to holster the setup.

Anyway, what does everyone do for a holster while at the range?

Thanks for your input!

I don't know of any holsters besides .22lr's that will hold a suppressed centerfire pistol.

I just put it in the range bag if I don't want to take the can off.

One of the few things I've seen that seems like it has a chance of being practical for a suppressed pistol is a "speed holster" but definitely not practical for EDC IMHO.

Something like the Hogue Powerspeed Universal Speed Holster or the Hoppner & Schumann Speedsec.

Other than that you can cut the bottom out of one of those neoprene Uncle Mike's contraptions,

A google image search for speed holster might be a place to start.

https://www.google.com/search?newwindow ... nlvxP_DtCk

FWIW agree with -B- that the bag is the best option ... not a big fan of tacticool accessories.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not so much going for "tacticool" as I am trying to keep from setting the pistol on the ground in the middle of a field. I'm certainly not looking for an EDC solution (rabbit trail: remember the batman movie where The Joker pulls that giant barreled pistol out of his pants and shoots down the bat-wing? Yeah, that's what "EDC" with a silencer brings to mind  ).

I would put it in a bag, but usually the bags and stuff are back at the car. When we're plinking with rifles or shotguns we usually use slings. I'm just looking for a solution for a suppressed handgun.

I'll look into speed holsters. I wonder how tight you can get the retention on those things. They look like they would pop right off with a slight bump.

I saw a video by fireman1291 ( http://youtu.be/B6rfKYuysNw ) talking about Battle Cloth holsters. They are intriguing... anyway, let me know if you think of anything else.

If you don't have a range bag that means you hand carry your ammo, extra magazines and oil?

Safariland 6004 and Battle Cloth hold suppressed pistols + LAMs. I do not have the Battlecloth, but I have the 6004 and it works well.

You may also look into holsters for a Mare's Leg and see if they fit or can be adapted.

Can you post a picture of the 6004 with a can?

My Safarilands had to be modified to have a threaded barrel in them.

Went looking for a pix and I think I may have misspoke. 6004 supports the LAM, but not the silencer. I will check though, Mine is for USP/TAC with LAM an I also have KAC can. Obviously I have not used it in awhile or it would be fresh in my mind.

Nope, I've got a range bag and usually a .50cal can for extra ammo. Extra mags are on my belt, typically.

If putting it back in a bag every time you want to put it down is the only solution then, so be it. I'm here to learn. I was just wondering if there were any creative solutions for holstering a handgun with a suppressor. It's more convenient to keep the gun in holster than to bag it and un-bag it.

In case you're wondering, here's a typical scenario: We start shooting at 10 yards, walk forward and check the targets, come back and shoot from 15 yards, move laterally to some barriers and shoot around them, go forward and check the targets --maybe move the targets around (requiring both hands), etc, etc. We're moving around all of the time. The bags stay stationary so we know where they are when we need to reload mags and the like. I'm sure ya'll do similar stuff. Square ranges are boring -- moving and shooting is way more fun. :)

Most of them have some type of positive locking mechanism that holds the trigger guard. You can set it so you have to hit a lever to release the lock.

The Hogue holster shown in the picture has a T-bar (you can see part of it just behind the front of the gun's grip) that you can push down with your thumb as you draw the gun.

Ok, I'm guessing you took the picture in a mirror and then flipped it?

My brain really locked up on the data I was seeing for awhile...

Why? the only thing messed up in that picture is the date stamp.

And yes - I took a picture in the mirror and then flipped it. Otherwise, you end up with what looks like a Glock with an ejection port on the left side.

This discussion came up on another forum, so I already have photos. First is a suppressed Sig P220 in a DeSantis 460 S&W XVR shoulder holster:

Image

Image

Thanks works great for crawling through brush or hunting, since it is a hunting holster after all.

Next, I discovered that a $15 Leapers UTG works great for carrying suppressed full sized hand guns.
(It's one of my favorite holsters since it works with every mid-full sized handgun which I've tried.)

Image

The UTG does not work with a tactical light, but that HK USP Tactical does have a rail adapter and a LaserMax Uni-Max on it.

Unfortunately, I cannot find that particular $15 holster for sale any longer. This $10 UTG "Deluxe Commando Belt Holster" might work for the range purposes which you have described (particularly with modification):

http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Deluxe-Comman ... 0018LA0UK/

It does roughly work with a Sig P220 with a round, 1 3/16" diameter suppressor but not nearly as well as the UTG in the photo. For $10 on Amazon, it's worth a try. Just be careful opening the package, because you might decide to return it. (It's just $10. If you can't find anything better, I'd cut the seams to widen it up. That should work for range purposes, but if not, well it's just $10.) Oh, don't expect the spare magazine pouch to work for double stack mags. (It seems that real commandos only use single stack mags.)

As an edit, after reviewing the rave reviews for the "Deluxe Commando Belt Holster", those must be Airsoft users. "Doesn't work with my UTG MK23." was the tip off. Another reviewer noted: "I didn't realize this was meant for Airsoft pistols."

Too bad Crye Precision doesn't make the GunClip for guns other than a Glock.

I would rather spend that money on a rifle or a case of ammo or a really nice optic ... but then $25 is probably the most I've ever spent on a holster.

Oh, you're one of those guys that spend $500-$1000 on a weapon to defend your life then stick it in a $25 dollar holster...

Well, I doubt I'll ever spend $1000 on a pistol, I've never spent more than $800 so far and that includes the NIB factory threaded P226 with raised night sights and a handful of 18rnd mags

So I suppose you're one of those guys who believes it's not possible to get a quality holster for less than $100

yeah, if you want a quality holster you're going to spend a good part of a hundred or more. Just depends on what your life is worth  . Mine's worth $100...When it comes to holsters you really do get what you pay for. I know that most people who haven't carried much or are new to this find it hard to believe. There are not many who carry everyday and have for any length of time who don't know this. 30+ years of every -fuckin -day -carry here. There are not many places to Cheap Out when you're talking life saving equipment.

So now my life depends on how much I spend on a holster ... what a load of drama queen douchebaggery.

I suppose I need to spend as much as possible on my belt and pants too?

And maybe I need really expensive shirts and jackets with as many pockets as possible and they probably need to be made of the finest ripstop snag free material available?

What about my shoes? Don't those need to be really expensive nonslip aggressive traction snakeproof steel toed icons of manliness so I don't slip or pull a hamstring when I'm lightning quick drawing down on the multiple assailants who have me cornered at the ATM?

What about a really expensive wallet for my CHL and a really expensive holster for my cell phone? Does my life depend on those too?

Don't I need a gun mounted laser and tactical LED for those low light parking lot conditions?

Crap, now I have to go look at really expensive hats to keep the streetlight glare out of my eyes because my life depends on good vision too.

You can try to go to the ridiculous to explain away the fact that you are just too cheap to buy quality equipment, but really it's ok. I don't know you and really don't care what happens to you. The thing is when advice is being given by experienced people none of these people say "get a cheap gun, put it in a piece of crap holster, just clip it to the side of your spandex pants and you'll be fine". You only hear that kind of thing from someone trying to justify his choice of equipment that won't stay in place, is too uncomfortable to wear all day every day, and that he constantly has to be adjusting to be sure it didn't fall off. You don't carry everyday...I know this because you have no clue what it takes to carry everyday, all day successfully. Once again that's ok, cause I don't care what happens to you. I do care that you try to convince someone that is new to this that you have the answer...and all the advice from all the experience out there is wrong. And before you say it...Yep, I am right. 8)
