Interesting WiFi access poit

Post by bakerjw »

I was waiting for a call from my outboard dealer yesterday while I was working on my boat and I went to check e-mails from my smart phone. I was far enough away from my homes wireless access point that it scanned for others. One of them that it picked up was "FBI Surveillance Vehicle".

Now I know that the FBI wouldn't advertise things in such a manner but I thought that it was humorous that someone would be so cute. The signal went away after a few minutes. Anyone else ever see something like this?

Very common in my area - lots of jokers name their APs things like that. One of my neighbors has something like "APD SWAT TRUCK".

For a while I was using (*)CSO SWAT SURVEILLANCE for mine. It seems the local PD, in a response to a +500% increase in number of suspicious people calls, from my next to nothing crime neighborhood, and not to be outdone in the race to nab criminals, sent in THEIR super secret squirrel van(s)... and after nearly 24 hours and some 100+ manhours OT (ROFL)... began redirecting said suspicious person calls to the SO... along with a e-mail to the Chief Deputy alerting him that if any internet investigation centered around the location of the SO cruiser assigned to me, and parked in my driveway, needed any help with "surveillance activities", they would be happy to help. It was apparently made clear that until that "investigation" ended, that all suspicous persons calls from my neighborhood would continue to be directed to the SO.

The patrol Lt. called me in, shared the local PD's clusterf*ck contact, and told me... unofficially off scale funny ... officially you will rename it soonest.

Seemed a bit much of ado over nothing, but I'm quick to grip which way the winds blowing. As a note, I had no idea how plush the chairs in the Lt's. office are.

Now I'm wishing I would have taken screenshots of all the goofy ass names people give their SSIDs.

I love firing up my portable access point in coffee shops etc. The SSID is Virus Installer. It gets attention when people are trying to find the free wifi.

Our entire hospital named the secure WiFi "Skynet." It raised a lot of eyebrows.
