Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Which of these K's is better?

Post by L1A1Rocker »

Well, I'm looking at picking up my Forever Silencer Project again. I've done a bit more looking into K's and now have two designs. Which of these two would work better and what changes would you suggest?

Oh, This is for my 300blk SBR that will see mostly a diet of Cast sub-sonic bullets.

First design:

And second design:

And one other question. When last we left off, I had the following design lined out. But, it occored to me that the spacer behind the second cone baffle was a bit long. I've circled it in red. Would you suggest shortening that space a bit?

Ok folks. Thank you for any input ya'll have.

OOPS: the length listed on both those K's should be 1.38"

First design

I'd get rid of the spacer, all together. It is essentially a Ks skirt and thus would fit right into the following face.

Check out my 45 Mauser build, as it is extremely similar.

I like that build!!! I've got a similar project lined up. I've got my stamp to build an integral on a Ruger 96-44.

I seem to recall someone, somewhere making these "coned K's". They do stack up neat. I was wondering if they would be any better than traditional K's.

A couple Q's on that "stacked K-Cone" design.

How are you going to keep the cone in place? Weld each one to the face of the K?
Would the cross jet porting be best staggered? I.E. the cone cut on top, the K cut on bottom, the skirt cut on top?

I was planning on forming a cutting tool that would allow me to machine the cone/K as one unit.

I hadn't really thought too much about that. The drawing shows the cone and K cut at the same time and then the skirt cut 180* off - like the K's are normally done. But, I see how doing some staggering may be a benefit.

I got your pm so I will see if I can help. The first design will be better by far, the main problem with second design is how much thru bore it will have ( by this I mean the clearance diameter you drill through the baffle will be too long). I have found on a K baffle that about .06-.08 of bore clearance length is ideal. The only change I would make to your first design would be the radius in the back, I have found cutting more of a v-notch works better than a radius, so instead of this ) you would have this >. I use a .344 ball nose end mill for the mouse hole on 30cal with a .348 bore. Hope this helps some. I don't mean to be stranger on here I just finally got my cnc's running and I am playing catch up and trying to take care of all my customers that have been so patient with me.

Like this?

Edit: You'll note that the "plate cone" (the centermost section of the plate around the bore) has been shortened a bit. I did this in order to change the angle a bit - it just seemed "right" to me to alter that angle.
