One of the men is a corrections officer, and, according to the story, "Fortunately for us he's still in his probationary period, so he's no longer affiliated with us."

Why is it 'fortunate' that he's in his probationary period? Would the charges have been different had he been outside of his probationary period? Would it have been more difficult to fire him? What difference does it make?

My guess when I read (or heard, as the case is here) between the lines is "union involvement". Probation probably doesn't carry the same weight for union representation. A post-probationary employee has been forced to pay dues and has no say in political donations... and receives relentless no-fault termination and full benefits until a hearing.

Unions. They are not good by any stretch of the imagination. People who cry to the contrary know less than nothing about economics.
