Where do you get your SS tubing?

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Where do you get your SS tubing?

Post by fastfire »

I first tried Speedy Metals twice and both times the tubes had defects.
Then online metals, also have had issues with quality tubing there.

SO...........Where do you guys get tubing that is acceptable for use as we use here?

The Pipe is but not the Tube. The SS Solvent traps from Diversified Machine use 316 Seamless tube from Online metals

That tubing is the stuff that was , One order had a deep groove from the manufacturing process the full length, the tubing they replaced it with was far from being straight and I told them it needs to be clean and straight.
I'll get the solid rod from them but NO tubing.

Just called Online metals, they said all of the ss pipe is welded. Talked to 2 different people.
They said the only seamless they carried was the ss tubing.

That would be a project, what material do you make your tubes from?

316L or 17-4 if its to be welded , I'd probably use 416 if I was gonna thread it.

I have access to a lot of old pump shafts so its readily available to me otherwise I probably would not use bar stock due to the cost.

I have a pump shaft, it's 1 1/2" I could cut it on my little lathe but it was not easy, Which materials are pump shafts?

it depends on what it was used for , if it was used in a high corrosive area it could be 316 or even Hastaloy , a lot are 416 though.
if its magnetic its probably 416 , in some rare cases I've seen 17-4 used.

This shaft that I had a hard time cutting on the lathe has the marking 418R on it.

I received the tubing from Online Metals 1.625" OD x 0.065" Wall T-316.
It is .006 out of round and in 9" .083 from straight all 24" that I bought.

Capt, I am now looking for 1.625" OD x 0.065" Wall and will take you up on that offer if you have this or something close.

That's much larger than anything I have in pipe or tube. Why not turn and bore the .083 wall.

There is no .083 wall, It's .083 from being straight on a 9" piece.

I've been looking into aluminum tubing as well. At first I was considering tubing from SD tac, but then looked for raw tubing sold in longer lengths because of the price.

I never considered the tubing would be so out of spec, perhaps buying thicker wall tube then truing dimensions will be necessary.

I get Al and Cromoly from Wicks. Never had a bad piece. Their prices are great and shipping is free.

What kind of boring bar & setup do you use for that? I tried a few different boring bars, placing a bunch of O rings around the tube OD, all kinds of different feed rates & RPM, feeding both directions, but no matter what, I'm getting all kinds of chatter & poor results trying to bore an 8" tube.

All I have are the rectangular shank boring bars that clamp in a standard QC tool holder - not the round ones. Do those make a difference?

Also tried going 4" in & then flipping the stock around, but I cant even get in 4" with good results.

I made a large boring bar from 1" cold roll and also made a tool holder for that bar.
Bore from 1 end 4" them turn the tube around then from the other end.
I had the chatter problem, then used a clamping set on the base of the QCTP, 4 clamps and that put a stop to the chatter.

The best way is to line bore the id then turn the od.A long heavy spider with lots of support points works to reduce chatter if a boring bar is used.I have threaded 9" tubes end to end with a boring bar.It dose take a bit of patience and HSS tools.

What style inserts are you using?
Have you tried pulling the bar, away from the chuck, instead of pushing?
Going against common thought, a deeper DOC and slightly higher rpm can help. Make sure your DOC is at least equal to the inserts radius. Sometimes a 55* is better than 60*.

Slightly more cost, but easier to turn would be to get a larger tube/pipe, with a wall thickness enough to give you proper (or close to) ID. Then, just turn the OD.
