338 Silencer on 30WM

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

338 Silencer on 30WM

Post by MMH »

How much louder would a 338 Lapua suppressor be than a 30. cal suppressor when used on a 300 WinMag? More specifically, what impact on sound does having a silencer bore sized for a 338 have when a 30 cal. bullet flies thru it?

I am designing a 300WM suppressor & wondering if I should not design/build one suitable for a 338 & not just the 300WM.

I have a friend with a MK-13 Mod-6 and has both a TBAC Ultra 9 and an Ultra 338 , having shot both can on the gun the 338 sounds better , we've shot both Black Hills 190 gr ammo and Some Mk248 Mod-1 ammo. The Ultra 9 can works well but the 338 clearly sounds better but it is a lot bigger , like 1" longer and 300" in diameter.
The 338 Ultra works great on a 10.5" AR-15 as well , better than some designated 5.56 cans

Only numbers I have seen have been for the SAS Titanium 338 Vengeance and the SAS Titanium 308 Arbiter. The bigger can sounds as good or a bit better than the smaller can. The Vengeance is 1.5" in diameter. The Arbiter is 1.375" in diameter. Lengths are similar I think.

I wonder if more material results in a deeper tone, as well as more expansion volume.

I have no silencer experience but would think that a even at the same sound level that a deeper tone would sound more pleasant than a higher pitched tone.

Generally a 338 size can will be bigger & heavier than a .30 can. If we had two identical cans, one with a hole sized for a 338 & the other w/ a hole sized for a 30 cal, how do you think that the sound level & pitch would compare between the two?

I've heard the Crux suppressors built for 338 are not as quiet as their 30 cal can the same length , they use a mono core design and the tube diameter and length are the same.
My guess would be that the deeper tone from the bigger cans comes from larger internal volume allowing the gas to stay in the can and not be forced out as fast. If you shoot a 300 win mag and a 308 through the same 30 cal suppressor the 300 has a higher pitch (in my experience)

A: My Theory is that just as more weight stabilizes the barrel harmonics, more material would resonate w a deeper tone. Even materials w different densities have different tones. Ti, SS, Al, Plastic, other coatings.
And yes, it's generally excepted that the deeper tone is more pleasing. But lower freqs carry in air better. So the high pitch will disapate quicker, and the deep would carry farther.

B: More volume results in lower dBs. But shouldn't affect the Tone.
And the 338 can would allow more bore jet to reach around the bullet during baffle transit. The 300 can w tighter bore would trap more gas, and for a longer time. Thus lower dBs, but little difference in tone. I don't think that human ears would notice the difference from 10m to side.

Will do when design is a little more mature. I have many iterations, but have not quite locked down on a particular design. When I get a design, I will certainly share!

SAS cans. I have an Ti Arbitor and am not necessarily a fan. It's 1.5 by 9. My problem is run-out. Mounted on a lathe chased thread (doesn't get any better than that) it ran out .016 at the suppressors muzzle. Sent it back and they claimed carbon buildup. If you have carbon buildup on one side that's a problem in and of itself. They sent it back and it was still .016 run out. Complained again and sent it back again. Sent a video of my setup on the lathe. They sent a video with .0045 run out and ask if that would be acceptable. If so they would go ahead and coat it. I said OK. I received a new suppressor, I did my test again. Turned a new test stub on the lathe, mounted the suppressor and lo and behold it ran out .011. Now I don't know to what degree this affect accuracy. But I think it is unacceptable for when SAS told me their standards are .0045 or less.
The Vengeance is 1.75 by 10.5
