Why are Octane/Osprey pistons slotted?

The blowback that comes out of the piston sprays gunk around the tip of the slide/barrel. Are the slots really necessary?

Rugged makes the same compatible pistons, but with no slots.

The slots were designed for the osprey indexing ring/spring retainer. It's the part that holds the piston in place & allows you to time it due to the eccentric shape.


When they started making octanes they decided that it would be more convenient for customers to be able to interchange Pistons with the octane instead of making you buy a new set.

Just fill-in the slot with some welding rod (or JB Weld Stick).
Much cheaper than $80

Thanks for the explanation. Learned something new! Yea makes perfect sense now, since the Osprey is still in production.

I've tried the 1/2x28 Rugged piston with my Octane 45 and works like a charm.... and much cleaner too.

Having to spend extra $$ for the Rugged pistons isn't ideal, but I'll just sell off my used Silco pistons to offset the cost.
