Suppressing 40 cal
I have always heard that suppressing 40cal is inherently hard, that both 9mm and 45acp suppress much better. I have a TiRant45 and I think 45 actually sounds a LITTLE quieter than 40 through it. Why is this? Would a dedicated 40 can (Osprey, YHM Sidewinder) do a better job? Just my curiosity working! Thanks.
Re: Suppressing 40 cal
Couple of factors in play. The muzzle pressure for 45acp is actually lower than 40. Same thing for their chamber pressures and energy outputs.
And the bore aperture in the Tirant is designed for 45. But when the smaller 40 passes through, a larger than necessary bore usually means increased sound signature.
Suppressing 40 is still fun if you stick with the subsonic 180gr rounds.

Re: Suppressing 40 cal
I have no issues whatsoever with the performance of my Octane45 on a Glock23.
The Tirant and Octane are 2 different animals so I'm not comparing them, but it does relate to your query.
Rimshaker has some good points as well.

My Osprey 45 works just fine on my Glock 23. I use the 180gr. bullets when shooting suppressed.

But when you shoot a 9mm through that same .45-sized aperture, it's quieter than either the .40 or .45 ammo.rimshaker wrote: And the bore aperture in the Tirant is designed for 45. But when the smaller 40 passes through, a larger than necessary bore usually means increased sound signature.
Re: Suppressing 40 cal
9mm has much lower muzzle pressure though. Overall sound signature is the combination of several factors working in tandem.Garrett wrote:But when you shoot a 9mm through that same .45-sized aperture, it's quieter than either the .40 or .45 ammo.rimshaker wrote: And the bore aperture in the Tirant is designed for 45. I don't think I've shot them back to back, but I have both .40 and .45 barrels for my Uzi. But my impression is that .45 sounds louder than .40 (or 9mm), when shot through the same .45 can.
Re: Suppressing 40 cal
I don't know about the Ti Rant, but in testing with the Osprey and Octane 9 < 40 < 45.

Re: Suppressing 40 cal
Just by ear, my Ti-Rant 45M in the long config 45 < 9 < 40 shooting 230, 147 and 180 gr respectively from a Glock 23 with conversion barrel for the 9, stock for the 40 and
on a Kimber Ultra Carry II with a aftermarket barrel. All are pleasant to shoot to my ear using sub-sonic loads. I am actually surprised at how nice the 9mm is out of the 45 cal hole.

I have a Yankee Hill Cobra in .40 cal. Shooting 9 mm vs .40 through the same can, I cannot really tell much difference, other factors being equal in my handloads. Powder and fps seem to make a bigger difference than caliber. Definite difference if one or the other goes super-sonic.
