YOU SIR, are an Artist.
Beautiful work.
Why didn't you flute the tube further toward the far end threads? Did you feel that there would be little gain?
Nevermind, I see the step-down in OD for the last couple inches.

Very nice lookin cansmithing sir like the other guy said u sir are an artist
hey watch this
Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
Nicely done. I went the MAAD route as well.
Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
It sounds pretty good, but not "Hollywood quiet"... I'm still tuning my loads and action. The gun has an adjustable gas block that I'm trying to tweak to cycle both suppressed subs and supers. I built this can to handle up to 300 Win Mag, and realize it's not the best design for low pressure rounds like the 300BO. I also plan to use it on my AR10 .260 and Rem 700 308 VS-SF. Thanks for the positive feed back.
My next approved Form1 is for a 5.56 cal I'm planning to build with the same mount and tube size, but with 9 cones...

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
2-3 cones followed by K's is a great combo for 762 and 300bo

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
I did some POI testing with my suppressor over the weekend, and took a pic of a couple targets I shot. The left target was shot with my AR 300BO at 50 yds, and shows the 2 groups: with and without the suppressor. The right target was shot with my Rem 700 .223 varmint at 100 yds, also showing the details of my test. Although both suppressed groups show a drop in elevation, I believe the Rem 700 group POI shift is mainly due to the weight of the suppressor on its 24" barrel. I built this suppressor strong enough to handle up to a 300 Mag using the stainless MAAD mount, 17-4 adapter and 17-4 end cap for a total weight of 25 oz.
The end cap has an internal 60* cone with a .375" hole, and a 50* exit cone. I have all clips lined up and oriented at 6:00 when mounted on the 300BO, but since the AAC 51T Brakeout muzzle devices do not have universally-timed external threads, the clips are oriented at about 7:30 on the Rem 700 (looking down range). The suppressor sounded very good on the Rem 700 too, with the usual sonic crack from the 3350 fps .223 ammo.
PS: I was shooting next to a contractor doing testing for a commercial suppressor manufacturer who commented that my Form1 on the 300BO was the quietest he has heard on that caliber. Just saying...

That's a good looking can, especially the end cap. I'd be interested to see the inside of that cap, if you have a pic.
Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
Here's a pic of the inside of my cap:
The walls are .5" deep, with a center .1" step and a .250" high 60* cone. The hole is .375" for .075", before flaring outward at 50*.

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
Nice, thanks for the pic.
Now that you've used it, do you feel like the 50* exit cone was a good idea? I'm planning to make a similar end cap for mine (also a 30 cal), and have been pondering different ways to incorporate a cone in it without making a long bore section.

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
The internal cone was originally the size of the step diameter, and had a bore "depth" of .350" (and no exit cone) when I first tested the can. The suppression was OK, but I believed it should be better. I modified it to this design and noticed it was a lot quieter, estimated at about 10 - 12 less decibels by ear, no meter. I built the cap with a large internal cone thinking it was a bonus baffle, without lengthening the tube, but I concluded that the long bore limits the suppression even more than the cone's benefit. This finding was also discussed on form1suppressor board a couple weeks ago.

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
What if you had drilled expansion tubes between the inner and outer cones?
Like the various designs in the inset boxes, and in blue at the lower right hand of pic.
Also shown on the sectioned can at its exit cap.
Again, Beautiful work!

That's the other method I was considering.whiterussian1974 wrote:What if you had drilled expansion tubes between the inner and outer cones?

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
I considered drilling 4 or 8 small holes, about .100 to .125, through the cap into the flutes on the front, to allow greater "disbursement" of the gas, but was worried it would make the can louder. After looking at a lot of commercial silencers' designs, I couldn't find any with multiple holes in the end cap, so I decided against it. Maybe some other suppressor builders have experimented with this?
Thanks again for the compliments...
Joe, I used your advice on the clipping style for the .125" stepped cut, and I actually saw this on the Sig SRD762 cutaway at their booth in Louisville. Have you tested this style on a radial/frustro type cone in a pistol can? All of the pics of commercial pistol cans I've seen are still using the "U" shaped clip... Thanks for your help.

Gunny50 does. It works GREAT for him.1rflman wrote:I considered drilling 4 or 8 small holes, about .100 to .125, through the cap into the flutes on the front, to allow greater "disbursement" of the gas,

The choke point limits the flow through the endcap. The air that would go through 1 hole, now spreads through a larger surface area and several different vectors. So less abrupt upset at each exhaust point. Thus, less blast-generated noise creation.
---
You still did a great job. The Exhaust mixes through Inner and Outer flow cones. But several ports would have created a "diffuser." Moving a larger Bulk of intermixed air, at lower velocity.

Tell me about those flutes, did you end up with 8 or. 9?
What size ball mill? How deep?
I like it!

Very nice can.
Now I really want to paint my can with Cerecoat heat transfer gray.

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
There are 12 flutes, 3" long. I used a 1/2" ball end mill, but the flutes are only .015" deep. The titanium tube has .070" thick walls. Also, the step to the front of the tube is only .010" deep. The flutes and step are mainly cosmetic, and have negligible weight reduction.
Be sure to post pics of your Cerakote paint job.

Re: 30 cal 1.625" Titanium w/MAAD 51T
Very nice!
Getting a reading on the db reduction would have been nice.
Hard to know if any improvements are possible without it, this based on comment made by contractor.
End porting final chamber may help depending on pressure within chamber, diffusing high pressure gasses to atmosphere over change in time is the key to subsonic suppression.
In supersonic, keeping noise level under sonic crack is all that's needed.
Mitigating blast and eliminating fireball (especially for night use) is all I care about.
Critters don't know where to run.

Wow! What a juicy build. I'm doing something similar to this for a customer this week. I've been taking my time warming up to cutting the titanium, and trying to conduct as much research as possible. Can I ask what kind of machines you used to mill the flutes and turn the reduction?
Beautiful work, by the way! Very inspiring.
