multi-caliber suppressors ??

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

multi-caliber suppressors ??

Post by texas yankee »

I may be getting a suppressor (my first) for a 5.56 \ .223 bullpup I'm lusting after - is there such a thing as a multi-caliber suppressor, something I could use for 5.56, 7.62x39, 9mm, and 22LR ?

Not 9mm

A good 7.62mm suppressor should be able to handle .223/5.56mm, but not the larger, lower-pressure 9mm.
And any sealed can would not be a great thing to shoot dirty .22 through. Too much gunk would stay in the can - soot mixed with vaporized lead.

A well made 9mm that can be taken apart will do 9mm, .22, 300BLK (subsonic only), but not 7.62mm nor 5.56mm high pressure rounds.
Shoot softly, and carry a big clip.

Multi-caliber, yes.

Interchangeable caliber, not in this country. At least not until after the Hearing Protection Act passes, if.

A .45 can will work on any pistol chambering smaller than .45. A .308 can will work on anything smaller.
The moments I was censored was the moment that I won. That's twice, now. Thanks jwbaker, et al, for my victories.

Joe, you should add this info to your website. Not only could it sway someone's decision, looking at it on your site, but it will most likely show up in a google search.

Just a thought to help those searching and potential customers

There are only two cans that meet your requirements- for the most part.
The Griffin Armament Optimus fits your current desires the best. If you decide to venture into .40 or .45, you'll need a different can.
The Silencerco Hybrid will handle larger calibers, but should not be used with rimfire cartridges like .22LR. .22LR is dirty, and needs a can that you can clean out periodically... Besides, the Hybrid would be kind of large on a .22LR, especially a pistol. Think that the Optimus might be a bit large too.

Personally, I'd gt two can's; a dedicated .22 LR can that is relatively easy to clean, and a good can like the hybrid or optimus. Look up the specs, consider what you will want now, and a year down the road, and maybe even further. Two months ago, the real wait was towards 10 months after purchasing. Find a dealer that has what you want; they will often let you fit it on- and you can sometimes judge better what you really need. Bigger cans like the Hybrid, and the Optimus will likely make your sights less than useful. Smaller cans can be louder. .22LR is a different animal and should be treated as such.
