Impressive Map--US States renamed with country of same GDP

Post by johndoe3 »

Sometimes we forget about how economically well we are doing (and maybe will do better with Trump). The map below renames each US State in the USA with the country name for a country that has ~same GDP as that US State.

You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

Excellent find! Thanks for sharing the Info and Sentiment. :)

You're right, we have it pretty darn good economically. It would be nice to see a population ratio for those figures. To see how many people in US equal the output of maybe 5 or 13 to 1 of the other nations. (Or the inverse if appropriate. :) )

To be honest, I don't see how the map helps understand anything. Without knowing how that country ranks globally, you have no clue whether your state is productive or not (solely w/ respect to the map). They should have simply marked them with the charted number of how that country ranks. But, good effort from someone.

The first thought that came to mind was state debt. Illinois and California both have extreme debt. A GDP to debt ration would be quite telling.

The color code shows the relative GDP. It's in Millions. So 30k(mil) = 30 Billion, is the lowest light blue. And 2.5mil(mil) would be 2.5 Trillion in only 1 year's GDP for that landmass and Population.

Baker brings up a good point. How heavily are the States and states leveraged in Debt. A large chuck of the USA Fiscal Budget is solely in Debt-servicing, meaning paying the interest on outstanding "loans."

If 1/3 of our Budget goes only to Interest Payments w/o ever paying down the Principle...Imagine a never-ending car lease where you can never terminate the Lease and never have any Equity. Just more debt no matter how big your monthly payments get. And you must ALWAYS continue paying Maintenance, fuel, servicing, detailing, Insurance, etc, etc, etc.  :?

My thoughts exactly. Per capita gpa would be more relevant as to how well we are doing economically.
