Do suppressors do the job?
My goal is to be able to shoot coyotes off my porch, without disturbing the neighbors. (the coyotes are not on the porch, that would be me). If I buy a 300 blackout upper, get a suppressor and correct ammo, will the report be subtle? thanks, Desert Rat
Re: Do suppressors do the job?
Absolutely. With subsonic ammo of course. Anyone outside would hear the shot but likely wouldn't equate it to a gunshot. Anyone inside wouldn't even notice.Olddesertrat wrote:My goal is to be able to shoot coyotes off my porch, without disturbing the neighbors. (the coyotes are not on the porch, that would be me). If you want it REALLY quiet, then get an adjustable gas block or a switch gas block and turn the gas off and cycle the bolt manually. Couple this with a big 30 cal silencer.

I know nothing about swapping out a gas block. Is this an easy move?
Re: Do suppressors do the job?
300 BLK with subsonics and a good silencer will be very quiet. A bolt action rifle will be quieter than an AR, generally speaking. However, if your coyotes are out beyond 200 yds. you will be asking a lot of subsonic loads. The trajectory will be more like incoming artillery than a rifle shot.
Still awaiting an original & riveting thought for signature line; stand by...........

Re: Do suppressors do the job?
fifty yards max for my coyote issue
Re: Do suppressors do the job?
Neighbors? Members of my own household are oblivious to pig missions I take utilizing the back porch. Except for one time, I went back inside to find my wife in the pantry looking at the electric panel. She thought that a breaker switch had popped. She said it was a subtle click like sound and did not recognize it as a gunshot.
On a side note, the feral hogs in my avatar are at 50 yards from my porch.

Put it this way:
The first time you pull the trigger, on a suppressed 300Blk firing subs, you are going to giggle. No joke, you will giggle.
So, ask yourself this question:
Do I giggle loud enough to annoy my neighbors?

Re: Do suppressors do the job?
If I were you, I'd buy one of Rugers bolt action rifles in 300 blackout, and hand load.
You can make the bolt action a lot more quiet than a semi auto, and also have a lot more room to experiment with different powders to achieve the best performance and most quiet report.
A lot of the blackout's main problem (in semi) is the powder(s) that people must use to cycle the action in AR15's. But you entirely eliminate that from the mix with the bolt action.

I don't care what your chart says

Extremely easy. All you need is a roll pin punch and an Allen wrench setOlddesertrat wrote:I know nothing about swapping out a gas block. Is this an easy move?

Re: Do suppressors do the job?
Just got some 200 grain Speer bullets from Midsouth and just for grins loaded them on top of 10 grains of Trailboss...~1025 fps to see how well they shoot at 50 yards(off my back porch). Very accurate btw and quiet as well. When I finished, went inside and asked the kids who were engrossed in their electronics, how my shooting session sounded.
Simply put, nobody'd be any the wiser.

I have a 300 BLK AR and Bolt gun and hands down the bolt gun is quieter. Not that the AR is uncomfortable but the action noise of the bolt being run on the bolt gun is as loud or louder then the gun shot. I'm going to assume you won't be taking more then 1 shot at a time so a bolt gun might be a good option. Here's 2 shots from the Remington 700 in 300 BLK at 200 yards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJh3YnemYlc
