Can an individual/trust "make" an AOW?

Post by mbogo »

Using the Form 4 process, can you "make" an AOW by adding a vertical fore-end grip to an AR pistol? Or does it have to be done by an FFL/SOT?

Its $200 to make an AOW, you use a form 1, not a form 4.

It's only $5 to transfer an AOW on form 4.

Yes, sorry, I meant Form 1.

So, can an individual (or trust) "make" an AOW?

The answer in the previous reply was yes. I agree, an individual/trust can legally "make" an AOW.

You're better off buying an Aow AR (good luck finding one) or buying an SBR, or building an SBR, instead of building an AOW. If youre gonna spend $200 might as well SBR it.

It's not for me, it's for someone who has nerve damage.

As stated above it is perfectly legal.

However, the only logical reason to do so is if the location allows AOWs but does NOT allow SBRs

It costs the same and the SBR has more options in the end.

Also there is nothing wrong with taking a pistol, giving it to an 07/02 and letting them assemble (build) the AOW and transfer it back to you for $5 + the fee for their time. Still probably cheaper than $200. The only downside to this method is the 07/02 has to keep your firearm until the form 4 clears.

FWIW, I looked into this a few years back with a local SOT and it would have cost me $40 plus tax. $5 stamp plus $35 engraving + adding a foregrip I supplied. (I thought it would be neat to have the "other" stamp) Other things came up and I didn't do it, now I don't know that it would be worth the wait without the weapon. Maybe if wait times come back down again!

Thanks. I too consider it impractical.

Save a few bucks but lose possession of the gun for 8-12 months, or pay $200 to do it yourself and shoot the gun as is until the stamp comes through.

I suggested SBR'ing it instead, anduse it as a pistol for now, then configure it as a pistol or SBR with a VFG.
