Hi Guys,
Thought you might be interested, following on from my recent purchase, I always planned to make a copy of the Welrod and so much easier with one to hand. Anyway I though I would create this post and as I get bits done I will keep this updated. The plan is for the first one to make a cut-away version, which would in it self bee quite cool but as a means of working out the manufacturing process and jigs, tooling etc.
Following on from that I will make a shooter in the original 32 acp>
So here is the start a bit of the recieved started and the bolt knob, heaps to do yet and got to fitted in waith all the other gun work so I will get there when I can
All the best

Are we taking notes
Is the magazine from a 38auto 1911?
What is the "grip" made from? Some type of phenolic resin?

Yes, I am tagging for extreme interest.
And if you by chance happen to have detailed measurements of everything by the time you finish, I would be especially interested.

I don't care what your chart says

Getting a bit more done on the Welrod copy, remember this will be a cut away display one only, just to work out the manufacturing processes and tools etc. so a dummy barrel in this one. Have to say I am pleased with how it is looking.

Re: Making a Welrod copy
Got a bit more done over the last few days, had to make a split mandrel to hold the bolt knob then slowly mill on the lugs and limit slot. Starts getting to the point you really don't want to stuff a part up when you have put a few hours into it ha ha.

Re: Making a Welrod copy
I had intended doing the detent when the receiver is done, making a kind of small centre punch that fits in the receiver and working back from there.T-Rex wrote:Don't forget that detent drill spot

As for the drill bit that small hole goes right through, just like that on the original and is for fitting/removing the pin that sit in the bolt/slot. I though I would use that when machining to give a bit of additional support. The split mandrel works well but I thought a bit extra can't hurt, I was dead nervous that the bugger would move during the machining.

Re: Making a Welrod copy
Ok Gents, time for another update, these latest parts have taken a bit of thinking about but, we got there.
First I made a boring bar to cut the groove in the receiver for the bolt lugs, now the next bit to work out how to cut the slots to fit the lugs, decided initial mill then a broach to nip out the corners.
So I made a holder to hold the broach then ground that to the correct rad, next I milled out the receiver for the lug slots (ignore the two extras at 9 and 3....even super heroes stuff up sometimes ha ha). So next how to lock up the mill to hold the broach, ended up making an Al clamp for the top of the spindle and bolt on parallels, so the quill could go up and down but not rotate.
Next to try the broach and it worked a treat, small cuts but much easier than I thought it would be.
I bit of a repair to fill the unwanted 9 and 3 cut outs and all looking good.

Absolutely understand, just don't forget about us
I'd love to make one of these, if we could get our hands on prints
