Oakland U in Michigan issues hockey pucks for self defense

Oakland University located in a suburb north of Detroit, has spent $2500+ to purchase hockey pucks to issue to faculty and staff for the purposes of self-defense against mass shootings (guns are prohibited on campus). Pucks are heavy for size and without training can a faculty member at Oakland U be expected to hit a shooter when throwing it during their one-time chance?

Chances of a faculty member striking a shooter in the head to incapacitate them are nil, IMHO.

Wouldn't it be better to issue faculty members a small leather bag to carry on the waist which could carry multiple stones for throwing (extremely old school), and maybe a handy stick for striking purposes?
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

... I'm having visions of a spree shooter bringing a shotgun just so as to be able to laugh while blasting hockey pucks out of the air. Super-villain style.

My girlfriend got one of the pucks! She feels so much safer now.

Jeeez ... Hockey Pucks ..

Seems to me that careful "Situational awareness drills" and safety training would be much more effective.

If you hear gunshots, take cover, press alarm buttons .. Start moving pupils to safe rooms .. when there, lock the doors (Which should be strong enough to resist even attempts at "shooting off the locks" --)

Like on ships, have easily recognizable alarm tones for "Fire" - "Shooting" - "Bomb Threat" -- and drills for the proper action in each case...
Set up a simple system for school staff to "locate" the shooter by pressing a button - and show this on an app on the teachers/staffs phones... thus making it possible to move away from the shooter in an orderly fashion. This might be done via the WiFi system...

This will eliminate a very large number of potential "targets" for the shooter, thus reducing the scale of the disaster, and making the follow up work for LE personnel a lot safer and easier.

Oh, and then ... Why on earth not arm the school personnel that would like to be a part of the solution? Hopefully they will never need to shoot anyone, but that applies to all "non-psychopatic" gun owners/carriers .. The old adage: Better to have a gun and not need it ...

I'm also friends with a faculty member. Her complaint is that the locks must be locked from the outside.

"Locked from the outside" ---- WTF?? How can that pass Fire safety rules? -- Surely you MUST be able to unlock classroom doors from the inside? -and thus be able to lock them from the inside as well??--
THAT makes NO sense ---

My guess is that they're locked from the outside, but the handle inside will unlock the lock when turned. I'm not sure, I didn't ask her.

A hockey stick would be better than a puck, and it's still stupid.
