New Zealand Gun Confiscation, not so successful

After a deadly mass shooting at a mosque in New Zealand, it took Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern only a week to announce a ban on all assault weapons and “military-style automatic weapons.” “This is what real action to stop gun violence looks like,” said Bernie Sanders...

… in New Zealand, as some of the U.S. primary candidates have suggested, legal gun owners are supposed to continue to be law-abiding and just turn in their weapons. Except with an end-of-the-year deadline looming, it doesn’t look like New Zealanders are anxious to hand over their weapons.

Cam Edwards over at Twitchy sister-site Bearing Arms reports that according to New Zealand Police Minister Stuart Nash, more than 32,000 prohibited weapons have been turned in since collection began in summer. That might sound like a lot, but it’s estimated that there are about 175,000 of those rifles in circulation in the country, resulting in a compliance rate of about 18 percent.
18% compliance rate.
You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

They have another month and a half to comply before becoming 'criminals' in the eyes of the law of New Zealand. Just a wild-assed guess, but I'd suggest we might see the compliance rate double or slightly more by closing time. 40%-ish, maybe even as high as 50%, considering how squeamish many are about breaking the law. Even an idiotic law such as this one. I wouldn't bet higher than 50% compliance however, as gun owners aren't exactly 'most people' at least in the sense of their political awareness.

The rising tide of political correctness, pandering to religious and other minorities, the pat-yourself-on-the-back mentality which is rapidly taking over popular culture, all feed into a bifurcation in society along a number of lines. Gun ownership is one of those lines. Most folks with guns know they're not going to go on a murderous shooting spree. The percentage of gun owners who become mass shooters is a few orders of magnitude less than the percentage of car owners who cause severe injuries or deaths by way of their bad driving. So many gun owners, and I'd guess that'll prove to be more than half of them in New Zealand, will just sit tight and hold onto their property while awaiting the next election.
