Schalldämpfer After-Burner

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Schalldämpfer After-Burner

Post by Historian »

2020's roaring in has precipitated a major clean out of a whole
file drawer of sketches and articles collected since 1965. It is
heartening to see wild a** ideas dreamed up, especially during
interminable and tedious program reviews, masterfully improved upon
and with today's lathes and mills elegantly reified.

The final batch that was feed into the shredder contained
a novel idea that I have not seen in the literature. So it
is presented here for anyone who might find it similarly
off beat.

An 'after-burner' on a suppressor.

Studies show a cone of pressure that emanates from
a silencer after the bullet exits a can. To further
reduce this signature the idea sketched is for
example to thread a ½" x 28 'bolt' into the front
cap of the can with enough protrusion that
a ½" x 28 muzzle brake, along the lines of the
multi-ported Tacsol Compensator 1" - 22lr - 1/2x28 Tpi Silver*,
is threaded on. I.D. commensurate with the round, e.g.,
.30" for .22, etc.

Holes drilled radially as well as axially on the extension
were imagined so long ago.Today's manufacturing has
made this a cheap reality.

The second yellowed page anticipated seeing if a marked improvement could
be further obtained by wrapping, what in those days was called
Chore-Girl ( copying a cigarette's filter tip ) with bronze mesh
surround... 'jelly roll' metaphor.

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.

I had never considered internally threading the front cap and installing any sort of brake or anything of the sort. You would think that even having a long solid piece (other than the bore) may would even hold the gasses longer.

Thank you for sharing that Historian.

Also, check your PM box. I sent you some photos that you may find interesting a couple of weeks ago of my version of an internal muzzle brake/comp that threads onto the barrel prior to the expansion chamber proper that I've been working on.
I don't care what your chart says

John A, post them here also.
I "think" that I understand what you both are talking about, but I'd like to visualize, as I must visualize something rather than merely reading or hearing about it.
Thanks

I wrote a separate post, but the site ate it....

(from memory)
Historian, didn't we discuss this concept before? Gunny50 even provided drawings and photos of how he uses this in his endcap like a diffusor.

I found a PM from Gunny50 and a topic which I found using the search function.

Additional holes in endcap?-

Here is Gunny50's reply, but the photos are now gone.

Ah, WhiteRussian1974, my friend, you are correct.

As Casanova once said he was mistaken in thinking that the first
thing to go is one's memory.

So happy to see you back.

Stay safe.
