Boring tool recommendations?

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Boring tool recommendations?

Post by sspbass »

I am an engineer, not a machinist. I am struggle getting the insides of my baffles made and have broken several tools in the attempts I've made.
Could someone recommend a boring bar small enough to machine the baffle internals and hit a .368" through hole.
If this person could also recommend the proper sfm, feed rate and depth/cut I would be eternally grateful.
My budget suppressor isn't going to be so cheap once I'm done with it.

ETA: material is 304 for a cone baffle. I'm using an EZpath II CNC lathe. My problem is matching the correct tool for the job to the correct feeds and speeds.

Where you aren't a machinist and won't be needing it to last forever I would check out Shars. They don't last forever but they do last more than long enough to accomplish your project and then some and they are cost effective for short term projects.

As far as speeds and feeds you should consult the owner of the cnc lathe, he SHOULD have a good idea where to start based on his cnc's capabilities.

No "budget" suppressor ever stays "budget".

Consider ME Consultant: http://closetolerancesoftware.com/

It's very handy for calculating feeds and speeds for various materials and tooling, HP requirements for a particular cut, etc.

Also look carefully at your g-code (how are you generating it?), it's pretty easy to have a small mistake in the code that breaks tooling without being overly obvious visually.

If you are asking about tip type a 45* or 30* degree braised carbide would work depending on how you program the cut.Vibration will kill a edge so will high heat.

Shars is good production type tooling a great "Resource"

Widia/Circle would be my first choice with Kennametal second, go with a tdhh insert that has a chip breaker in it, my speeds and feeds on 17-4 pre hardened stainless 460 rpm, feed of .006 per revolution with a .025 depth of cut and it breaks the chip ok and cuts nice.
