Sell .30-06 and get 300 Win?

Post by quiettime »

While back I sold my Garand to fund my DPMS GII (my first .308). I still have a bolt gun in .30-06 (Model 70 sporter contour).

Thinking about selling all my '06 stuff off and getting a 300 Win heavy barrel. I don't really see shooting the '06 much with the GII now.

What says the forum? Worth that extra bit of power?

The fact of the matter is that for factory ammo, the power of .308 and .30-06 are identical for the same length barrels. Yes, one is capable of juicing the .30-06 to 60-80 fps faster as handloads at or above max chamber pressure, more than the .308. But if you are shooting factory ammo, then there is zero advantage to .30-06 over .308. Meanwhile the 300 Winmag offers a significant increase in velocity.

Yes, sell the .30-06 and get the Winmag.

You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time...and those are pretty good odds.

I'm assuming it's not a Pre 64 when I answer this. :D

I'd do it in a heartbeat. Light bullets for medium game, heavies for large game, and the ability to effectively shoot long ranges. I've got a Sendero in 300, and I'm saving up for a NEMO Omen Match. I love the 300 Win.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

My opinion is keep the 30-06. Its just so darn versatile. I have one and target shoot and hunt with it. I also don't own a 308 nor want a 300WM. My wants and needs are different than yours. Get what makes you happy. Lots of folks love their winmags and you must want one because you asked the question. By the way, shooting the 30-06 with a can on it is a hoot.

Just not sure. I would have never ditched 06 before I bought a .308 but love that rifle and how it shoots.

Maybe I will keep and save up for a Winmag 8)

Even better. get em both
I grew up shooting and loving 30-06 and will never part with it.
I've gotten new caliber guns and enjoy them too. Nothing wrong with expanding the gun safe.

Hah, funny thing happened, right after this a friend emailed me a list of guns he is liquidating and one of them was a Rem 700 in 300 Win. It is unfired but got some minor rust on it in the safe so I got it for $450.

My plan is to true the action and rebarrel it (eventually).

Funny how guns always find a way to my home, kind of like stray cats
