New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Saw in latest issue of NRA Rifleman ( Jan 2016 ) ad for CCI Quiet-22
"75% Less Noise" .22 ammo.
On their site they list among the characteristics
" ... 68 Db @ shooters ear "
If this meter reading was not done with an iPhone microphone then
who needs a suppressor. Best Mask-22 is 115 Db.
Gray beards here have any clarification?

It is truly stupid quiet with or without a suppressor. 68dB is definitely a stretch though. Sometime this week I'll see if I can make you a video thoughHistorian wrote:Saw in latest issue of NRA Rifleman ( Jan 2016 ) ad for CCI Quiet-22

I have shot some and its louder than a suppressed 22r shooting subs. I bet it is well over 120db.

Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Yeah, likely measured using a smartphone mic and SPL app. Even the dirt cheap Chinese SPL meters rate unsuppressed CCI Quiet around 120dB, decently suppressed from a pistol at around 102dB. My smartphone has a fairly decent microphone for a phone (Samsung Note 3) and gives a suppressed reading of about 89dB. How such an absurdly low number got into an ad is a mystery. Someone wasn't being very careful. Sure it'll be quieter out of a rifle but not that much quieter. That's casual conversation quiet.

Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Official SAAMI test barrel length for 22LR is 24".
And that's what CCI goes by when they advertise any specs. But what we don't know is what instruments/method/mic location they used to measure 68dB.
Quiet-22 coming out of a typical 16" barrel will definitely be louder than 68dB.
I shoot Quiet-22 through my old Marlin 39A lever action that has a 24" barrel.
Yep it's definitely quiet enough in the backyard. No can or ear plugs needed.

A dry-fire will be louder than 68db...
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Try it through a bolt/lever action rifle with a 24" barrel. It's pretty sweet. But I know that's not a typical 22LR rifle length nowadays.glocker17 wrote:I have shot some and its louder than a suppressed 22r shooting subs. I bet it is well over 120db.

Still louder than 115db in my opinion.

Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
My quietest suppressed PCP is still much louder than this reported noise level in actual sound pressure. Probably around 110dB, though I don't have access to proper testing apparatus. My eBay'd meter gives me about 100dB for that 12fpe rifle which has both a 5" long aluminum monocore then a 1.5" x 8" K baffle suppressor slipped over the end of that. It's freaky quiet. But no one familiar with decibel rate charts would suggest it's quieter than 105dB at a very minimum, and probably a bit higher.
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
According to my testing, from a 16" barrel, the CCI Quiet metered 125 DB at the shooters ear.
With a 26" barrel (didn't test from 24") that number was down to 114 DB
Dry firing the gun was 111 DB. Dry firing on an fired shell was 109 DB.
All are 8 shot averages. I didn't keep the notes of the individual shots to give high and low, but I do remember it being a fairly narrow swing.
The meter was placed 6" to the left of the shooter's left ear. B&K 2209 with 4136 Mic, all in proper calibration.
I don't have notes on humidity or temp, I was satisfying my own curiosity more than anything. It would have been in the 90's and humid though, as the test was early September in FL

Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Well that pretty much settles it. The stated decibel level from the magazine is complete nonsense. Thanks Tony.
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Not sure if it was just me, but I got really poor accuracy out of CCI Quiet. Ran it through a TacSol SBX 10/22 with a Spectre II. Standard velocity MiniMags were one ragged hole, Quiets were about 4" group. Quiets didn't cycle the action obviously.
Even if the metering data claimed were true, it's still at ~700 fps out of a rifle. Might as well be shooting a pellet gun. The advantage of a can is that you can get a really quiet shooting .22/can combo that's pushing closer to 1070 fps.

The primer only .22 ammo @ 500fps is probably even quieter. Though CCI has twice the mass and so nearly 3x the energy at 700'/s.JPB wrote:... it's still at ~700 fps out of a rifle. Might as well be shooting a pellet gun.

Does someone know the Colibri dB for reference?

Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
I have tested the CCI Quiet in one of my semi-auto Remington 550-1's, and only had one failure to cycle in 16 rounds - do believe that one round was a bit short on powder. This piece will cycle standard .22 shorts, with little or no noise. It too has a 24" barrel w/floating chamber, the patented method Remington used to reliably cycle .22 shorts in semi-auto rifles.
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Before hanging CCI out to dry on these, perhaps a box of the new "model" needs to be used. If you are testing ammo that is 3 months old, they're not the same.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

22, *any* 22 has been available in the last three months? Where?RJT wrote:If you are testing ammo that is 3 months old, they're not the same.

Super Colibri are stupid quiet (all I hear is the hammer drop on my suppressed pistol), but really just a novelty. Good luck trying to hit anything with them.whiterussian1974 wrote:The primer only .22 ammo @ 500fps is probably even quieter. Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
I accidentally bought the quiet 22's at Walmart thinking they were the regular ones and they don't work in semi auto's, bummer.
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
Still, consider yourself lucky lol. They work... but you have to manually rack/charge it.Philrozzi wrote:I accidentally bought the quiet 22's at Walmart thinking they were the regular ones and they don't work in semi auto's, bummer.
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
What lot numbers should I look for on the new batch? If I can get some I'll retest, though I doubt there will be much change.RJT wrote:Before hanging CCI out to dry on these, perhaps a box of the new "model" needs to be used. If you are testing ammo that is 3 months old, they're not the same.

Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
My only complaint is the CCI Quiets are filthy freaking dirty. They vastly accelerate the cleaning schedule of the gun.
Re: New CCI Quiet-22 LR - 710 fps
I'm not sure of the lot number, but the new ones are segmented hollow points. I have a bunch of bricks of the old solid round nose, and they're different from the ones advertised now.Tony M. wrote:What lot numbers should I look for on the new batch?
