My First Can - HELP!

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

My First Can - HELP!

Post by ART-FL »

I am finally gonna start on my first can.

Basically I want your guy's opinions.

My design is the one from the "home workshop silencers I" book

But, since the booklet is for a smg and pistol I had to change my specs......

This can is for my AR in .223

I will be using the rubber baffle to slow down the bullet like the handbook says... Is this ok for a .223???? What rubber should I use?

Im using stainless steel 316L for all the parts. (good???)

Measurements:
Lengh: 9.8 in
Diamiter:2.3 in

What diameter should be the hole for the .223 ???
I was thinking: 6.5mm...... (IS this ok????)

WHAT DO YOU GUYS RECOMMEND???

Thanks in advance.

I recommend throwing that book away.

Do you have an approved form 1 in hand?

That's a HUGE can. The wipe is a bad idea, and the "Home Workshop Silencers" are basically 50 year old tech.

The rubber wipes are a horrible idea. Like he said that is some old technology, not to mention it will degrade after the first shot, and probably be dangerous very soon after.

I haven't made any cans yet, but I will probably make a few monolithic cores first in 22LR, to practice machining techniques etc.

Down the road I will turn out some spiffy K-baffle designs.

As far as a rubber wipe - at best you will throw your accuracy off ALOT, at worst you will get massive baffle strikes every shot, which is probably pretty dangerous to anyone standing around you.

Not to mention that is a disposable type of silencer, that was probably designed for close range assassinations cause it would leave untraceable marks on the bullet. Not basing that on any sort of evidence but that would be a good argument!

Plus I think they had that style can on CSI and made that same claim, actually making that claim about silencers in general, that they make the bullet 'untraceable', etc.. holywood and their ignorant BS..

Yeah I love how on some the CSI type shows they can trace a bullet to the can it was shot from by "the marks the can leaves on the bullet"

If that book is by Keith Anderson then it is trash. It's a complete joke. The book does'nt even mention what a form one is or how to do it legally. With all the parts and 2 hours I could make a silencer by his book... but it would suck. :( Worst $15 for a book I ever spent.

You can't compare the sound levels from a video. It just doesn't work.

Why? Bad ideas or bad execution?

Well, the cans he shows you how to make are made from readily available parts and a little bit of welding.

For a form 1, and a desire to make a great quality can its bad, but lets say SHTF and you need to whip one up in your garage then it could be useful.

I wouldn't recommend it for a serious machinist built can.

Well sure I guess it does have it's application, but If I'm gonna pay $200 on a tax stamp its gonna be made on a lathe.

I have to agree that sub-sonic's freeze plug can is the best bang for the buck I have seen. I would definitly build that over the wipe can.
