408 cheytac can- (updated with range report) 4/10/09

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

So what type of internals you gonna use? just a series of stepped flat baffle type?

The machine work looks realy good.

Got to do a little more work on the baffles. I made the middle baffles (Aztec- Devo - style )I call them Stanley cup baffles.

I'm thinking of putting them in in this order. I still have a little more work to do on them. But I'm making progress.

Hmmm... I'm interested to see how this turns out I was a little bit concerned using .065, 1.625OD stainless for my 308 can. But if you're using .08 2.19 aluminum for a 408, then I shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Your looking at handguard deminsions not suppressor dimensions.

Ah, that would explain it all. I should've read more in-depth about it.

Nice work.... What are you using to space the baffles? Sections of tubing matching the I.D. of the outer tube???

Oddly enough, my first thought was, "that reminds me that I need to order a digital powder scale from Midway."

Nice bit of work there.

I guess it's a bit late to mention that 2000 yards is a nautical mile and obviously much further than a statue mile. 2.4 klicks is a long way out.

My 223 can sling a slug that far. If it hits you, you might wonder if it's beginning to rain.

I decided on using spacers (the pic shows the spacers with the OD to match the inside and later I turned the inside thinner to save weight)

then tig welded the end cap on

Then packed all the baffles down (with spacers)to make sure they were bottomed out then used a stick welder with a stainless rod to secure the blast baffle.(yes you can weld stainless with a stick welder) The rod would go deep enough to do this. You can see in one of the pictures the heat marks on the can where this is.Then welded the other cap on.

Well I got to go to the range! I'm satisfied the way it turned out. Here is the can next to my m-2000 so you realize how big this is.
Image
I haven't had a chance to coat it yet so it is just bead blasted.
Image
Image
To give you an idea how big this gun is I'm 6'7" and 275.

Here is a video of a guy shooting my gun. When I pulled it out he was saying how "He always wanted to shoot one of those" so I said why don't you shoot it so I can video tape it. and he was more than happy.(it was windy out)

It was totally fine with out hearing protection. You could hear the supersonic bullet and a Big woosh. I have 25 dollars and about 20 hours into this and more than that the pride of making it your self!

That is very impressive suppression on a big round , the fact that its ear safe is amazing.

So is the internals the same setup that you posted , just 3 stepped cones?

Super sweet.... The welds are great and you have sold me on the stepped cone setup I have designed on paper and CAD for a .308 can. The video says it all... I just wish I lived close enough for a drive to hear it in person.

James there are 5 baffles. 1 blast baffle 3 big cones then one "small" stepped cone then the end cap.

The blast baffle was side cut to send gas sideways into the big cones.(I don't have a picture of it  )

Jimmy,

Great job on the can, that's a really nice looking rig.

Are the inside surfaces of your Aztech cones tapered on a specific angle or stepped?

Approximately what percentage of the total volume inside the can is blast chamber?

wicked,
The first baffle is 1/3 into the can. I didn't have any formula on the step cones. I "free handed them"- I got the outside dimension of the barstock then cut my hole. Then started removing material so it looked good to me. Then I tried to copy them. They are not the same but I don't think it matters in my set up.

Seriously awesome! Have you checked it for accuracy? That's my biggest concern with cones. Were the interior of your baffles bored out conical, or was it just a straight hole through the baffle? What dimension did you have from top of cone to back of baffle?

Again, really cool - as I've come to expect from you...
