Integrally suppressed AR-10 .308 questions.

General silencer discussion. If you want to talk about a specific silenced rifle or pistol, it is best to do that in the rifle or pistol section for that brand.

All NFA laws apply.

Integrally suppressed AR-10 .308 questions.

Post by PolsVoice »

Firstly, does anyone make one in .308? I know that SSK makes a 300 whisper version, but I'm looking for something that I can use regular ammo in as well.

How do heavy subsonic .308 rounds perform ballistically? Would they be able to cycle the action of the AR-10?

300 whisper is full power regular ammo, it's just lower powered than 308 winchester, just like 308 winchester is lower powed than 300 win mag.

308 subsonic works great in 1/10 twist barrel, lighter bullets ok in 1/12. No it will not cycle a semi auto.

If you want cycle then go 300 whisper in a smaller gun.

Get a qd 308 silencer and use full power ammo in a semi auto host and subsonic in a second bolt action host and move the silencer.

Good info here. I have an AR-10 with an AAC 762SD and shooting full power ammo is like shooting an unsuppressed .22. It will not cycle subsonic ammo but it is spooky quiet. I am setting up a couple of other .308 options for the can at the moment, a single shot handi-rifle and a bolt gun. I too looked at the 300 whisper option but decided to spend my money in .308.

Most likely you would run into accuracy issues due to the different heating and cooling rates of barrel vs. suppressor.

Another thing to consider is the heavy bullets usually fired at subsonic velocities really need a faster twist rate than normally found on a .308. One in 8" (some people even us 1 in 6.5" to stabilize 240's) will provide far better results than 1 in 10" or slower twist.

Supersonic (full power) 300 Fireball (Whisper) is comparable to a 30-30 or 7.62x39. Not up there with .308 power but nothing to sneeze at.

Anybody running the new Remingto 30AR? Looks to be similar to the 300 Fireball/30 HRT.
