saiga front end shortening

I'm talking about the gas system and foregrip chop like tromix and the likes do. Is this an easy mod that can be done with a welder and cutting tools in the basement? does anyone have instructions on how to do this? I was a tool and die maker for years and I can weld and cut and all that so I think I should be able to handle the work, just not sure how to go about it.
