Personal Protection use ONLY
Personal Protection use ONLY
Would you use JHP..............147gr or 115gr.? I know the data.....but which would do more damage?

Fire 4 or 5 and the degree of difference in damage won't matter.lobo56 wrote:Would you use JHP..............147gr or 115gr.? I know the data.....but which would do more damage?

Whichever is available in Winchester LE bonded, God Dot, Federal HST, or Remington bonded GS.

I don't see many 115s listed, so 147 seems best.

You better be one hell of a good shot then. If you are that good it won't matter the weight/performance differences.lobo56 wrote:And if you only have one shot?

I roll with 147 gr Ranger Bonded Hollow Points.

The correct answer is nearly always the heaviest, premium hollowpoint that is reliable and accurate in your weapon. In other words Federal HST or Winchester Ranger all in 147 Grain............

Re: Personal Protection use ONLY
So far, from the responses, it seems that you guys favor the 147gr.
I read this article (http://www.chuckhawks.com/ammo_by_anonymous.htm) a while back and it says to use 115 Cor-Bon +P and specifically says never to use 147gr because it is "weak, worthless and malfunction-prone" (not my words or opinions)
I know you cannot believe everything you read on the internet and opinions (like the referenced article above) are like, well you get the idea, but a lot of other articles I have read say basically the same thing, that a premium 115 gr +P hollow point is best for self defense, a lot also recommend the 124gr rounds.
I'm not posting this to pick a fight, or say that the 147gr isn't as good. Because honestly I have no idea which 9mm round is best for self defense, I currently have the Cor-Bon 115 +P loaded in my CCW because of the various articles I have read.
Just wondering what lead everyone here to the 147gr rounds for self defense.
Thanks,
Tim

Re: Personal Protection use ONLY
I believe the people really dissing the 147gr HP rounds are talking about older generation of 147s that often failed to expand and performed like FMJ in tissue. Current generation HP should expand reliably at modest velocities.

115 +p all day long, if not then the federal 115 jhp (9BPLE) and what ever the round if its coming from a handgun it needs to be in groups of four or five of them as quickly as possible.

If you believe chuckhawks knows more about terminal ballistics than the FBI then continue with 115gr loads. If you want to know what has passed FBI standards follow the link above.tdale4 wrote:I read this article chuckhawks.com...
If the Cor-Bon you use is the DPX it is the only 115gr load that meets the FBI testing that I know of.

ANY ammo CAN make you a GM if you put enough of it downrange.
There is no ammunition available that magically turns you into a GrandMaster by putting it in your magazine. The keys are:
-- Cultivate a warrior mindset
-- Invest in competent, thorough initial training and then maintain skills with regular ongoing practice
-- Acquire a reliable and durable weapon system
-- Purchase a consistent, robust performing duty/self-defense load in sufficient quantities (at least 1000 rounds) then STOP worrying about the nuances of handgun ammunition terminal performance.
ANY ammo CAN make you a GM if you put enough of it downrange.

230 grain... that way you only have to shoot once.
Re: Personal Protection use ONLY
147 gr. +p federal HST ftw!
The average american is getting fatter and fatter. If you get assaulted by an obese thug you need the extra penetration the 147 grain rounds give you to reach the vitals.

+1 Then again you also want it to not open after it passes the vitals. So open fairly soon and HOLD TOGETHER.. Bonded bullets help.

Re: Personal Protection use ONLY
Good point, but i'd rather take the extreme expansion of the HST vs. slightly less expansion in a bonded bullet... I'm not a cop - I figure if I need to be shooting someone through a car door I should probably be running away.JohnInNH wrote:

Ranger 147 gr ammo is NOT your regular ol HP ammo. This stuff expands reliably and easily. Being Bonded it holds together as well.jdj wrote:Good point, but i'd rather take the extreme expansion of the HST vs. slightly less expansion in a bonded bullet... Re: Personal Protection use ONLY
I know they're good pills, but not quite as impressive or dramatic expansion as the HST, bottom line is I wouldn't want to be shot with either one
