My bird guns are to long for indoor use so I keep a nice short side by side 12 ga. by the bed with #4 buck for two quick shots and a sleeve holding 5 more if needed.

Before I bought my benelli m2, my mossberg 500 was my dedicated HD gun and I was firm on the pump for self defense, but now that I've gotten to shoot my M2 and got to know it I'll reach for it every time. I've also never been a fan of the whole racking the action to paralyze someone with fear tactic either. I think it has an equal chance of scaring someone into shooting you.

Agreed. Use the one you know how to use best.

Any unannounced entrants to my castle place themselves at risk. Since I am not in a war zone, I will do everything possible to be clear about the level of risk a bad guy(s) is facing, including verbal challenge. A round being chambered serves as one more audible warning. In the event I am forced to perpetrate lethal violence on another human, even if they are trying to deal evil to me or family, I will do so with clear conscience, knowing that I gave them every chance to stand down.

It will stand me in good stead through the ensuing legal actions that follow such events.

Meh... never seen the noise of racking an action paralyzing or scaring anyone into inaction/action. Actually, your semiauto will also need to have a round chambered in preparation to engagement, which requires more dexterity/thought than a pump gun, and has a similar sound. (and please don't tell me your by the bed gun always has a round chambered.)

When I finish the cycling with a pump it brings me back on target. I like pumps.

Pump
Slower rate of fire.
Loss of shoulder placement between shots Pump.
Hence faster to re-acquire target after shots.

Semi
Lower recoil.

Same reload time.

Ive never heard the M3 referred to as the best of anything. Many refer to it as "the boat anchor".

Pump is better. Nothing says: "I MEAN BUSINESS!" better than the sound of a round being chambered. Not even Wayne Wright can do that, him and that stupid cowboy hat!

Mossberg 930......I can fire the weapon one handed if necessary (Wounded, kids in tow, etc.). Softer recoil for the wife and kids. No issues with them short stroking either. Just as likely to short stroke a pump as have an issue with a semi....at least that has been my experience. YMMV...

I've since moved to a semi-auto (Remington 1100) 20ga for my HD shotgun.

I'm wringing out a Vepr 12 now to see if I trust it for this role. It's an improvement on the Saiga 12 and resolves the issue of difficult magazine changes. It runs like a rifle and I'd miss it less than one of my rifles if it were taken as evidence after a self defense shooting.

If you get the chance to try a Vepr 12, the new Saiga variant with magwell, or one of the converted MKA 1919s, you'll see what I mean. An easy-to-change box magazine with 10-12 rounds and a last shot hold-open with an external bolt release are significant improvements.

Sorry, that was an ambiguous way to phrase that. I was referring to the modified 1919s I've seen that add collapsing stocks and/or front rail systems. It more closely resembled an AR15 with a freefloat, railed, handguard.

One of our 3-gun regulars was showing his new MKA 1919 off a few months ago and I remember noting that it was quite different from the one I had seen on a rack at an Academy Sports. I'm not sure of the other modifications made, but it seemed to be more than cosmetic. I recall at least one reference to a change with the gas system and perhaps also the recoil springs.

I have to say, after many years of being a fan of pumps, I now put my trust in an 1100. it's the definition of reliable fire power!

I'll see you and raise the MFW pot to include the lower pictured 870 pump in a bullpup config for inside building handling goodness...

If money is no object, I would get a tactical version of whatever semiauto the duck hunters are suggesting. A shotgun that will run reliably after being dropped in a duck pond should do just fine in the home.

However, if money is tight, I would recommend a Mossberg or Remington pump with a slug barrel. Most have sights and can accept tube extensions if needed. I'd run number one buckshot and slugs.
