Can one get a 18T can upgraded to a 51T or 90T?

Post by OnyxSkyDV »

Sorry if this has been covered, I searched and did not find.

Is there any option or possibility to have the mounting of an 18T suppressor sent back to the factory to have a 51T or 90T mechanism put in?

Worth asking.

Nope.

But, 18T cans work surprisingly well on 51T mounts. (Warranty will not apply)

Onyx,

I had a 762SD that was having major issues backing off of my AR's and gas guns. I had the springs changed twice to no avail. It really frustrated me.

I stopped by Accurate Ordnance the other day and they have devised a really cool and simple way to stop the backing off issue. Basically they add a set screw to the silencer and it has solved the backing off issue. Contact Mark and ask about it. They are good people and will take good care of you.

Wouldn't this just turn your QA can into a threaded one?

I've always been curious why a stiffer spring doesn't just solve the issue...

I'm just stabbing in the dark here, but I believe it's a harmonics issue. The excess vibrations cause the spring to "jump" off the mount and loosen a smidgin. Once loosened the direction that the silencer wants to travel is forward, and the acme threads translate this movement into a rotational one. This further unscrews the silencer and the harmonic vibrations become harsher. Rinse and repeat for each shot.

So I bet if you attached a harmonic dampener to the barrel behind the mount the issue would go away. But then again my brother is the mechanical engineer of the family. That actually makes me think, he's coming down for thanksgiving so I'll ask him if he has any thoughts on the problem.

I've always wondered if you have a 2 spring mount... why not remove the spring that is farthest from sitting in a valley?

Can a M4-1000 or 762-SD with the single spring base have the extra cuts made to take the second spring?

There is a new 90 tooth mount for the new 300sd silencer.

This is what we have done to a few 18-tooth 762-SDs. The screw is modified to fit perfectly in one of the notches on the mount.

Image

We remove the spring(s) from the suppressor, tighten on the customer's mount and then drill for the screw(s) in a mount "notch".

Image

We've done a few of these with only one screw and several with two screws for guys who wanted extra assurance the can would not loosen. Customers have used these on auto-loaders that have been run pretty hard and various other hosts. So far, so good. The suppressors are easily removed by removing the set screw(s). Some guys have run these on multiple mounts and they simply tighten the suppressor then, if necessary, back off slightly until the screw(s) engage a notch.

The screws don't pull the suppressor to the side one way or the other so there is no POI change or greater risk of end cap strike.

So far this looks like a good solution to the suppressors coming loose.

Thanks. But the real brain behind this modification is Jason Nixon. I think he achieved an elegant solution in that it is simple, inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing - well, at least nicer looking than some of the giant twisted spring things I've seen some guys do. LOL.

I'm blessed to work with not one but TWO pretty darn smart and talented machinists / gunsmiths. Between Jason and Dave they come up with some neat ideas and their machining work is absolutely top notch.

bookhound, does this modification need to be "timed" to a specific mount or will the set screw "line up" with all 18T's on the same valley between the teeth?

Curious what AAC thinks about this too with regards to warranty.

Very nice solution, but it would look like the firm lock up would limit the suppressor to a specific flash hider it was matched to.

I think some guys missed my comment regarding multiple mounts:

"Some guys have run these on multiple mounts and they simply tighten the suppressor then, if necessary, back off slightly until the screw(s) engage a notch."

My customers who have gotten this modification didn't care about warranty. They were so tired of their cans coming loose that they were no longer using the products. I'd also like to know what AAC's "official" view might be on this modification.

I find once my mounts get dirty, my 762SD locks up way tighter.

Really like the set screw solution. I'd use it if I was having a problem for sure.

Mark,

I'm glad you could stop in and show pictures of what I was talking about and how effective it is. Anyone that has an 18T silencer that is having issues should absolutely consider this.
