I just saw the commercial.
Not sure if it'd rather shoot my finger with a 22 or a 45 in the short term

At first I thought this topic was about those crazies (like an acquaintence I know; built bomb shelter & is hoarding herbs/pepl to rebuild) who have planned for the Mayan end

There's a thread in Survival / Preparedness on them.

Stupid ....... As usual, the media takes a good premise and decides to make fun of weird extremes.
Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:

...Jesus Christ and the American G. I.

Half the people on the show are 300-400 lbs and live in the country. Their risk of type-2 diabetes and heart disease far exceeds the end of the world. Their preparation for survival is not rational as they are preparing with the wrong methods.

Dead nuts on target. Personal mobility is a definite survival prerequisite. If you have to bail, use a truck. When the truck dies or runs out of gas use a bike. If the bike gets a flat or becomes otherwise useless, then run. When you get too tired to run, walk. If you can't walk any farther, crawl. Three or four hundred pound people don't do this very well.

The missile silo being converted to "condos" was interesting. I bet it never gets finished though.

Yea, that missle silo concept. Just a hole in the ground with one way in and one way out. They could be taken out in a heartbeat with toxins introduced into the air intake system. As for defending the place with the weapons shown and not shown, how many shooters can you cram around the inside of a 4 X 6 doorway and be effective? Really? 1 to 2 Mil for a death trap? I'll take my chances on the outside thank you.

But who will be carrying around toxins in a SHTF scenario. If you can afford the silo then you should be able to afford a few years worth of food and a reliable water source.

I still wouldn't have one though.

I once flew to a silo that I was considering buying - way in NY near Canada.

My sense was that it was so isolated that one would have to be nuts to also want to be 100 feet underground. I realized that the fortress concept only interested me if it was near people.

Probably a wash, or cheaper, to actually build a "fort" at a current location...assuming local ordinance doesn't.
Brick laying isn't a monumental feat.

I don't see the show continuing much longer. I did notice in the episode where the guy shot his thumb off a lot of silencers. One of the kids appears to be shooting an internally suppressed 10-22 while the other kid is shooting a bull barrel 10-22 with a threaded muzzle. Also, the man is show very briefly carrying what appeared to be a silenced shotgun (yes the do exist).

Then there was another episode where the man was showing the camera the guns in the safe and came to a Marline Camp carbine 45 "where the whole barrel acts as a suppressor".

IMO, any serious "prepper" needs to seriously consider silencers in their collection. Provided of course, that they are legal in your state.

I was watching Operation Repo and it appeared fake, so I looked it up. It is all actors. So basically, like Reno911 - though Reno911 is so outlandish that it does not much pretend to be real.

They should add a physical fitness component - perhaps make each adult family member do the Army fitness test and use their average score.

Any "prepper" that actually thinks that mainstreaming their SHTF back up plan on national television is acceptable is fucking mad, and I do not use my words lightly. The obese factor is coincidently a result of this brain drain. I would recommend the 2 levels of the BUD/S prep workout for any die hard survivalist to successfully jumpstart a sustainable lifestyle, complemented by "The Warrior Diet". A great read by Ori Hofmekler.

Have you tried eating just one huge meal a day? It sounds like a fun thing to try.
