Learning from Tropical Storm Issac

Post by Sumsky »

I live in West Palm Beach Fl, we only got the outer bands of Issac steady rain so we are stranded on my property, need a bridge to get to the road, and even if we got to the road we would need a Truck. I stored up a bunch or food and water, Charcoal for cooking, everything we need to survive. I learned something from this. I need to get a stove that I can use indoor to heat water, and heat all the can food we have, since we have no power, and its constantly raining outside. If it was not raining I could build a fire outside not a problem, but its steady raining. Cold Spam taste like Crap, but we ate it anyway.

I grew up in hurricane country, been through Camille and a few others, one thing I learned is never, ever, ever build or buy a house without a natural gas stovetop in the kitchen. :D

I would be more prone to lean towards propane and propane accessories. Natural gas can be interrupted if a pipeline were to be burst for some reason.

I am definately going to add one of those mini propane camp stoves to my survival items. I was doing well until my kids started saying I cant eat this stuff cold, and outside was ripping with rain, no electric, and we cant go outside to build a fire to cook. I looked at my wife and said I could surely use a cup od coffee right now. Cold Spam, and bottled water had to suffice.

40+ years of hurricanes on the coast, couple thousand or more total hours without power and never an extended natural gas interruption but maybe that's just me. I never had to refill my gas line either. ;)

After a storm like Katrina I would expect gas to be shut off in portions of a city, mostly where buildings were demolished. But if I don't have a house I'm not worried about gas from a line or a tank. After Camille gas was easier to get back than electricity.

You have to pick the odds you want to play against, mine priorities are natural gas, propane then electricity based on personal experience.

500 gallon LP tank and a 25kW Generac work wonders. :D

coleman camp stove, white gas or propane, propane is easier to store.
Sumsky, I'm guessing you don't have a garage or carport where you could have the grill going....

Yep, that's what I have, double burner and I keep 5 or 6 propane tanks just in case.

I use it right on top of the regular stove, its safe there.

Wing propane stoves are among the best. Great for camping and survival after natural disasters.
