Re: Oxy-Acetylene Welding for tacking baffles, welding endca

No press fit for a braze or solder job you need a good bit of clearance for the braze to flow in. A loose slip fit would be the tightest I would go. If the braze can't get it, the joint won't braze. Also realize as things heat up your clearances many change, so make sure by heating you are not closi...

Re: Nagant revolver gas sealing brass, 7.62x38R, Making/Form

Great to see this tread has come back from the dead. The nagant project had been back burnered until an ammo solution could be found. Thank you both for providing me with options. dmmccarter, can you please tell me what your original brass came from? Curious if you formed your brass from something e...

Re: Oxy-Acetylene Welding for tacking baffles, welding endca

The biggest problem with gas welding is that the heat is not concentrated enough so the surrounding areas will got hotter and you will get much greater distortion. TIG, MIG and arc welding will all weld with much less distortion. One of the main reasons you don't see gas welding being used much anym...

I had plated bullets through a fast twist barrel leave stuff like that inside the suppressor. Switched bullets and no more crap left in the suppressor.

Re: Silver braze VS TIG welding a 4130 silencer.

I like brazing to attach metal. Much easier for a hobbyist to do good brazing work in my opinion. When you are learning to weld you can make a weld that looks great, especially after you grind it a little, but I have not strength and will fail quickly. If you do good prep work for a braze joint and ...

Re: Deburring ?

I like to use a machinist scraper, it has a triangular blade and I normally use it the same way you would see someone use a small paring knife to peel and apple. Hold the tool with your fingers, put your thumb at the far end of the work and pull the tool towards your thumb. Buy a few of the scrapers...

Bender, You are right, I am not being fair to small, perhaps part time "kitchen table" dealers. There is no reason that they can't be every bit as good or better than a large store front operation. You certainly don't need a big flashy store with an expensive car parked out front to be a f...

Re: Question on 3 jaw chuck

I have a 3 and a 4 jaw and honestly I don't think I have used my 3 jaw for anything other than a fixture on my rotary table on my milling machine for a long time. Keep practicing with your 4 jaw, you can get very fast dialing in something. The secret is having two chuck keys so you can work the jaws...

Re: should i thread a suppressor or weld it to the barrel?

I think people are working there way to what I am thinking. Why not braze or even soft solder(just get enough surface area) the suppressor on? Much less chance of heat distortion and you can undo it easily if alignment is wrong or you need to take it off later. But I guess my main questions is if yo...

I purchased a rotary table, wedge type tool post, numerous dial indicators and measuring tools, all excellent functionality and the price was still less than I could find used...

Re: Why isn't Class 3 more popular?

The only thing I think I should point out is paying $100-200 for a transfer maybe a steal and is nothing to complain about. Think twice before you decide to save $50-200 by going to some guys house who does transfers part-time at his kitchen table. I finally have a good dealer, full time who is only...

Wolf, great images they really show what is hard to describe in words. I guess I am spoiled by having an old overhead motor belt drive machine. No need to make up a hand crank to turn things. I just disengage to gearbox and grab onto the vertical belt that is right in front of me and pull it to rota...

I like glass for layout and set-up. A good poor man's granite surface plate. Normally very flat and even. Plenty accurate for my home hobby level of work, especially for the money. I have a bunch of 1" thick glass that I really like for layout and is also nice if put very fine grit sandpaper on...

Re: Cutting threads

My guess is if you are completely "wiping" the old threads out then you are not engaging the half nut at the correct time. Not sure if it is a technique error or a faulty machine part or one with to much lash. You can thread without a threading dial. My very old SB never had one, I just wi...

A lot of things fall into Class 3, I only have serious experience with two kinds: For suppressors: At my gun club most everyone enjoys shooting my suppressed weapons, but suppressors are not cheap. Figure at least $1K and probably closer to $2K (suppressor + dealer fee + ATF fee + barrel work + high...

Re: 22LR Wet can

If you think the puffs of smoke from the front of the suppressor look neat, keep shooting your suppressor wet without cleaning it. I used to spray in a little CLP into a 22 suppressor I kept on a short barreled pistol in hopes that it would keep the crap moving out and make it easier to break apart ...

Have you tried just running the gun dry? At least the whole bolt and receiver area? I only put some light gun oil into the trigger group moving parts and maybe a drop onto the spring guide rod for the recoil spring. In my experience any wet lube will attract crap. Besides after a few rounds the carb...

Re: Dumb question about threads

"Standards" are interesting that way. Were I guessing, I would say it was because that is the finest 1/2" tpi die that comes in a standard set of threading dies and whoever was doing the early suppressor work in NZ wanted to be able to use a tap/die that was easily available (even if ...

I like projects as much as the next person, but it seems that you are duplicating Aguila SSS 22 ammo. I can't find any specific write-ups about the ammo, but my guess would be if you are willing to commit a rifle/barrel and get the chamber cut specifically for that round you would be able to get bet...

Re: Freeze plug or other low-brow can for 7.62x54r?

I will let someone else comment on the freeze plug idea. Off the top of my head I would say that porting is going to be a huge problem with very little reward. If you are going to try and drill holes into your barrel and you don't have a quality machine shop set-up (a baby drill press with a small v...
