Re: Any HAM radio guys out there?

I've been licensed and been active for 26+ years, currently hold an Extra class license. Last year when we had the earthquake in VA, no cell and SMS texting had a 5 minute lag time at a minimum. Something else to look into is winlink/airmail, it give you the ability to do e-mail from pretty much any...

Also look for the old AT&T Long Lines facilities, not as deep, but most definitely larger footprint and hardened as well.

Re: As suspected OBL raid was filmed via helmet cams

I believe that everyone in the situation room was on a video conference with Mr. Pieneta and several other folks while listening to the live radio feed of the operation. To my knowledge (and things could have changed), but the video from DEVGRU was recorded by the helmet cams and not transmitted as ...

Re: Amateur Radio (Ham)

Interesting to come accross a Ham thread in a Silencer board....Maybe it was like living in a diverse neighborhood when you were a kid, but I got my Novice when I was 12, General with 13 WPM code @13 (K6HAY) and they had not yet invented multiple question test. It was "Draw a colpits oscilator...

Re: Illegal Immigrants Protest for Access to Higher Educatio

The state of Maryland is trying to pass legislation to allow any "undocumented" person to go to an institution of higher learning at in state rates as opposed to out of state rates. First they get my property taxes to go to primary school and now they want more of my taxes to get a higher ...

Re: Rifled 12 Gauge Pistol

It is my understanding that black-powder guns are generally exempt from NFA regulations . I believe you can have a b-p shotgun with barrels less than 18" and be OK . That would probably apply to my uncle's blunderbuss, at 16" and roughly .78 it makes a lot of noise and can be fun to put a...

Re: Rifled 12 Gauge Pistol

If it was originally manufactured as a longarm ( rifle or shotgun) , the barrel cannot legally be shortened less than 18" for a shotgun , or 16" for a rifle , without prior registration . Overall-length is also a factor ... A rifled-bore over .50 is destructive-device , and requires regis...

Re: Most Powerful Mobile Radios?

As for the OPs original question, any used commercial radio that does 110 watts from any of the reputable manufacturers (motorola, icom, kenwood, etc). In a year or so, you will see a bunch of used VHF and UHF gear do to the narrow band requirements that will be in effect I believe in 2013. The down...

Re: Amateur Radio (Ham)

For those interested in upgrading their license to General, the question pool changes Jul 1, 2011. So whatever study guide you have is good until then, but may only be so-so after that date. If you are in the MD area and would like to take an exam, the Laurel ARC does FREE exams the 3rd Saturday of ...

Re: Most Powerful Mobile Radios?

I know, I'm resurecting an older post (I may do that as a new guy, with updated info) Check out MURS for unlicensed operation, similar to FRS but higher power and VHF. A good durable BTSOOI radio for this band would be a Motorola HT1000. You can generally pick them up for $100 or so. If you do decid...

In my experience, when connected to a node via TNC/commputer, a radio will only be able to do packet or data duty. A second radio will be needed for voice transmission. I have...
